Beyond The Threshold
Nacht und Nebel
[top]
You play the role of fictional Lovecraftian occultist and paranormal scholar Friedrich Wilhelm von Junzt, celebrated author of Unaussprechlichen Kulten, a volume exploring the blasphemous worship of ancient and alien eldritch beings. It's a creation of Robert E. Howard of Conan the Barbarian fame, who was a friend of Lovecraft. It was his equivilant of Abdul Alhazred and the Necronomicon. Although the story's focus is centered around the nameless narrator's search to find a large and ancient black stone in Hungary and the horrible discoveries he learns when he dares to delve into its origins, the strange death of Von Junst after he finishes writing "Unaussprechlichen Kulten" is the premise of the game "Beyond the Threshold." The game attempts to provide a more detailed account of how Von Junst died and what he did just before his death. There are virtually no details as to the cause of his death in "The Black Stone." Through all your investigations and studies, your unwelcome scrutiny has not escaped the attention of certain dark forces; as Nietzsche said, "If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." Something oozing from the black heart of the abyss has followed you to the very door of your Düsseldorf study with an eye to curtailing your research into Things Man Was Not Meant To Know; safe for now in its reinforced arcane security, but not indefinitely, you must determine the nature of your pursuer and procure the necessary components to send it back to the Cyclopean ruins from whence it shambled. This is accomplished through standard Myst-style first-person navigation of a series of static screens using your mouse's two buttons to investigate, manipulate and combine the contents of your study into a talisman powerful enough to thwart the hellish tormentor who lurks just outside waiting for your guard to drop. The game takes its name from a short story by Lovecraft's literary heir, August Derleth, and uses the Wintermute game engine.

Blackwell Legacy, The
Wadjet Eye Games
[top]
A new company called Wadjet Eye Games has been founded by independent developer Dave Gilbert, and the first project announced is an episodic series called The Blackwell Legacy. Gilbert, best known for his freeware adventure Two of a Kind and fresh off his first commercial release, The Shivah, will once again seek to create a game with distinctly old school adventure gameplay and presentation. The new miniseries builds on the story and characters first introduced in another Gilbert freeware title called Bestowers of Eternity. It stars a medium named Rosangela Blackwell, a reclusive would-be writer in New York City, and her "spirit guide", a ghost named Joey Mallone. In each episode, this unlikely pair will be called upon to "assist tormented spirits and investigate supernatural events." Their first adventure will see them confronted by an unexplained series of student suicides at a local university. Each episode will focus on a standalone investigation, so it won't be necessary to play each game in sequence, though an emerging backstory will provide a connection between episodes for those who do. Each game will cost $14.99 USD and be available as a download directly from the Wadjet Eye website, though the company is also exploring the possibility of a boxed version. The current plan is to release a new episode every 4-5 months.

Curious George
Namco Hometek
[top]
For more than 60 years, children and adults alike have followed the tales of a little monkey named George – known for his fun-loving nature and insatiable taste for curiosity. The story begins as The Man With the Yellow Hat travels to the jungle in search of an artifact exotic enough to save the museum where he works. Naturally, George follows him back to the big city and embarks on a series of mis-adventures. Players control George as he runs, jumps, climbs and swings his way around Africa, the museum, The Man With the Yellow Hat's apartment and more – solving puzzles and interacting with new friends from the movie. Jumping between platforms and swinging from vines and chains is quite easy. In keeping with the game's preteen target audience, it's impossible to swing in anything but the right direction. And, when jumping from said vine, you'll find that George's double-jump ability is much more powerful than it really needs to be. The only other controls that you'll really need to concern yourself with are the crouch button, which can be used to move stealthily and to crawl through air vents, and the interact button, which can be used anytime that George gets close to an object that he's curious about - as indicated by a question mark that appears above his head. When you interact with these objects, which include everything from bees' nests and bushes to toilets and televisions, you'll be awarded a number of "curious points" that can be spent on unlocking new outfits for George, movie clips, production art, and four different minigames titled Boat Deck Boogie, Bubble Trouble, Firefly Follies, and Balloon Break.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
Funcom / Aspyr Media
[top]
6 years after the critically acclaimed modern adventure The Longest Journey was released comes the sequel Dreamfall. It will feature some characters from TLJ, but will concentrate mostly on a new cast. The premise is that the Earth we know is actually only half the story of the universe. Our scientific Earth's true name is Stark, and its reality is mirrored in another dimension by a magical Earth called Arcadia. The game concerns a young woman named April Ryan who lives on Stark in the 23rd century. When a disaster throws the balance between the scientific and magical Earths out of whack, it's up to April to step in and restore equilibrium between the two universes. Core to the story are three playable characters: Zoë Castillo a twenty-year old young woman who lives with her grandfather; Kian an assassin who will begin to question his beliefs and returning from TLJ, April Ryan who will discover that no matter how hard you try, you cannot escape the past. In what can best be described as a modernized version of point-and-click, characters will have an innovative 'focus field' that allows you to interact with and scan the environment. Instead of point-and-click, you sweep the area with the focus field to find interactive objects or inventory items. One of the puzzles we were shown utilized the 'focus field' as your character had to light a torch and it does facilitate a smooth transition between puzzle and game without interrupting the flow of the game.

It features a quaint mix of action, fighting and adventure genres with eccentric parody elements. It has a humorous non-linear plot and 3D comics style graphics. Frasse and the Peas of Kejick
Rikard Peterson / Trumgottist Games
[top]
This is a nice freeware game made with the SLUDGE engine. You are a blue ball of fur who decides to go for an adventure. For this, you need to enlist the help of your green, handless friend, as well as the occasional advice of other characters. It has a standard fairy tale story but very well told. The challenges you'll be facing are varied, and some of the puzzles will be very hard, thanks to certain lack of logic. This is somewhat offset by the two-character play, where each character is very unique. Your primary character has hands and thus can hold and manipulate inventory and climb ropes. Your secondary character, on the other hand, is smart and thus can communicate with others much better. He can also kick things around, which can become useful. It's extremely linear, and so figuring out what needs to be done won't take you all that long. On some screens you can scroll left and right, but the player won't get an indication of this, and some important clues may be overlooked. The production value of this game is very high, with simple yet very cute graphics and a very good soundtrack.

Heartland Deluxe & Unbound
LimpingFish
[top]
This is an AGS engine adventure game series of three short introductory games based on the backstory of an upcoming full-length game entitled: Wound. The entire game takes place in a single rendered room, in which you can scroll using a 360 degrees 1st-person panoramic perspective. Quite short, it is part of a larger series of vignettes centered around a mysterious scientific project called caterpillar. When R. J. Cooms, a local nut, leaves a note at the City Pursuer newspaper, reporter David Lawson, troubled by soaring headaches, goes to his apartment to investigate the matter. Coombs is not home, but Lawson snoop through his belongings to find clues about what has happened. The reporter needs to watch television clips, listen to tape recordings, and find a way to uncover the sinister secrets hidden in the room. Controlled using the mouse, you can either examine, pick up, or use objects. There is also an inventory to hold a few items. Although the game is fairly short, the shreds of evidence and the puzzles will keep you busy for an hour. Unbound is the second vignette in the Wound series, was released in 2007 and is meant to be played after completing Heartland Deluxe. This entry further explores the story introduced in the first game, but now from an entirely different perspective. The player is cast as Dr. Fielding, one of the scientists involved with caterpillar scientific project that went horribly wrong. He is being questioned by an unknown group of people about the work of Dr. Powell who was also with the project. The game is played from a first person perspective in a single room with a full panoramic view. Only a small amount of puzzles needs to be solved and there are two main actions: pick up and examine, next to the inventory. Most of the story is revealed in the intro, and in the game through some documents and Fielding talking to himself. The aim of the game is to help Fielding escape. This release is shorter than it's predecessor, and will take less than five minutes to complete. The third game will be called Mobius.

Museum Of Broken Memories, The
Jonas Kyratzes
[top]
This freeware game is a beautifully woven interactive narrative that may even be considered a work of art. The point-and-click adventure consists of five (5) starkly different levels, or vignettes, that explore feelings of inadequacy, hopelessness, anguish, loss, and the like. It takes place in a museum where there is no visible exit, but some of the paintings serve as portals to other worlds in the main character's brain. You can move around by clicking on a room on the museum's map. The images and words expressed may seem familiar to anyone that has found themselves slowly sinking into a world of depression or self-doubt. But in the end it is a soulful journey that must be experienced to appreciate the unique form of narrative that the author has constructed.

The Hardy Boys, on a separate covert operation, are also visiting the Mapu's and staying at the family's cultural immersion center. When Nancy arrives at Camp Quigley, she sees a monster ravaging the camp, and soon discovers that Dr. Quigley is missing! Could the monster she saw be Kane 'Okala? [top]
In the depths of the Ancient Steppe appeared a weird town. Once a small settlement scattered around the monstrous Abattoir, it unexpectedly developed into a mysterious, isolated establishment with an odd social structure. This odd society has managed to survive for several generations. It could have continued to aspire, were it not for a sudden outbreak of some enigmatic, lethal and inescapable disease, which begins to mercilessly slaughter the denizens inhabiting the area. Even science has proven helpless in finding a cure, or at least providing some explanation. Three outsiders arrive in the contaminated town. The first was a highly-educated Bachelor with a ruthless manner of investigation, assigned by the provincial authorities. The second one is a far-sighted Ripper with a reputation of an ingenious surgeon, in search of his father's terrible heritage. The last character is an eccentric girl, possessing mystic healing abilities, that could become the town's heavenly salvation were it not for the constant fear in her dejected eyes and fresh memory of the horrors of her recent past. Each of them must survive in this hell and play a vital role in the fate of the doomed town. It's a bizarre combination of first-person game, role-playing features, non-linear plot and real time flow. The town has a life of its own, it constantly changes and adequately reacts to the player's behaviour and random circumstances including the heroes - when one is chosen, the two rejected heroes act on their own, plotting against the player.

Penumbra

[top]
Penumbra is a horror adventure game featuring state of the art graphics and makes heavy use of physics. Penumbra was created as a technology development project, with the aim to explore new uses of physics in games. Penumbra was created by a small team of students, four people to be exact and a couple of helpers that did specific tasks such as voice-overs and music. They worked on the project between September 2005 and April 2006, the engine is completely in-house developed. The game includes all sorts of eye candy that you would demand from a contemporary retail title. It is not just about the tech however and the game's developers have spent a long time making the storyline intriguing and incorporating the in-game physics in such a way that the result is a very cohesive and immersive title.

[top]
In yet another free AGS (Adventure Game Studio) developed game, escaping from a prison is never easy. But doing it with a correctional officer's consent is even harder. Officer Matthew Holmstett is a walking, talking regulation book and has his own set of ideals. Getting him to do what you want won't be an easy task. Don't overdo it, or you may find yourself handcuffed to a radiator very fast. Nobody trusts someone convicted for murder that easily after all. Much like the Monkey Island series, a verb coin is used for interaction with objects or other characters. The story is rather short but there are four endings to discover, each with a different set of requirements to fulfil. Recommended for mature audiences only.

He visits locations in the city to collect clues: the record store, the park, a gym, a volcano, and even a library, a place he tended to avoid like Bee Gees records. Done entirely in pastel colours, the game has a distinct retro feel, similar to the LucasArts adventures. At the bottom of the screen, you can select the actions (walk, examine, pick up, use, talk) on the left, there is an inventory on the right, and a command line just above it. Rooms are roofless, as Jazz Man cannot only walk around, but fly to different locations as well. Puzzles are based on conversations and item combinations, with a fair amount of pixel hunting. Sometimes problems can be approached in different ways, and the final part of the game offers four different endings. There is no voice acting, but the game features a large amount of jazz-inspired background music, and Jazz Man has a solo up his sleeve as well. It's available for purchase for $8.95 and is longer than either Apprentice game.

Thayer's Quest
RDI Video Systems / Digital Leisure
[top]
Originally released in the arcades in 1984, Thayer's Quest drew fans in with its inventive interface. Instead of the standard joystick for control, it used a unique keypad. Success in this game is all about your decisions, not your reflexes. Designed for the arcade scene by Rick Dyer, the creator of Dragon's Lair, it was a game that gave players more choice and allowed each player to have a unique gaming experience. You control Thayer as he journeys through the Five Kingdoms to recover the lost artifacts of Quoid. Beware of what lies on your dangerous journey through the kingdoms as using the wrong spell or giving up the wrong item could be the last move you make. However, many people you'll meet along the journey will help you. The game is also available as an interactive dvd for your television. The arcade machine made use of a keyboard to issue commands but now you can actually touch items to pick them up. In 1995, Thayer's Quest was adapted and released for several common gaming platforms and CD-ROM under the title "Kingdom: The Far Reaches." Thayer's name was changed to Lathan and all the game sounds and dialogue were redone. In late 1996, Shadoan, a newly animated sequel to "Kingdom," was released.

Timothy and Titus: Saints, Martyrs, Heroes
White Knight Games
[top]
This is a Christian 3D action-adventure platform game from a new Australian developer. The time of early Christianity was testing even to the most faithful — persecution of Christians was particularly rife from the Pharisees & Sadducees to Nero, the Roman Emperor. Amongst it all, the letters from St Paul to Timothy and Titus have gone missing, stolen by a dark, mysterious letter thief. As they seek to recover the stolen scrolls, their adventures will lead them across the ancient lands of Crete, Epheus and Rome to unravel the mystery of the stolen letters and spreading the Christian message to those they encounter along the way — from drunken pagans and Roman soldiers, to grieving widows and angry Pharisees. The game uses a "Christian Gameplay Paradigm", featuring core Christian virtues and actions. Gamers will be able to toggle between the characters of Timothy and Titus, utilizing the power of Faith, Hope, Love, Prayer, the Gospel, Healing and more. Each of the chararacters have different, complementary strengths - learn new Christian abilities, and fast paced action moves to keep them out of danger and to find the missing scrolls through 4 different levels.

Tony Tough 2: A Rake's Progress
Prograph Research / digital tainment pool / Anaconda
[top]
This is a prequel to the first game as we help a 13 year-old Tony solve his very first case. The game follows one day in the life of Tony as he investigates alien-landings and ancient Indian-cultures in his hometown of Washington, New Mexico during the early 1950's. But the graphics are also retro, for though they have progressed from 2D to striking 3D characters, the high-resolution graphics are presented in an Art Deco-style that pays tribute to the American small-town paintings of Edward Hopper and it works for the graphics alone are reason to purchase this game. It's again a point-and-click interface with inventory objects, but now we have real-time shadows and lightening effects, real-time weather changes and lots of interactive objects. The developers are promising over 30 rendered locations and over 20 characters, most of whom, you can be sure, will be slightly eccentric.

URU Live: Myst Online
Cyan / Gametap
[top]
In this multiplayer online version of URU, players can move at their own pace spending hours discovering visually stunning real-time 3D worlds, solving a large variety of mind-challenging puzzles, enjoying the company of other explorers, and following an epic storyline. That Uru Live has life at all is probably surprising to some. The game had a strong fan base before it was shut down during beta on February 9, 2004 due to a lack of financial resources. Left with no official place to play the game, many players stayed together in an unsupported freeware version of the game called Until Uru, made available by its developer, Cyan Worlds. Now Gametap will offer it as part of its gaming service where for a monthly fee you can play a range of games. So far it is available in the U.S. and Canada but will expand to other parts of the world eventually. There are a number of changes to the game from the freeware version. GameTap has implemented a new physics engine that governs movements in the game's virtual space and has new sound support for Uru Live. Explore a growing selection of ever-changing worlds on your own or with your friends. Discover believable persistent online environments that change when you interact with them, and the various in-game events assembled by the Uru Live developers. Be a part of the many in-game and out-of-game events set up by individuals in the community. Play multiple mini-games while you wait for friends to log-on. Create a personalized avatar that you can customize. Receive your own personal island place where you can relax and call home; you can also personalize your home to fit your mood. Receive customizations from the Uru Live developers by completing different tasks or being apart of in-game events and groups. Use text chat to interact with friends and "neighbors"; use Voice chat to personalize your avatar even further.

What Linus Bruckman Sees When His Eyes Are Closed
Vince Twelve / Xii games
[top]
Inspired by the dual screen of the Nintendo DS, this is a freeware adventure made with AGS (Adventure Game Studio) where you play two games simultaneously, real-time, and in split-screen. In Kami, you guide the spirit of a female samurai, killed in a village raid. To save her people, you must free the fallen god Izanami, trapped deep inside the same caverns. In DocMcVonSpaceBurger, you are the cartoony alien Junior, only wearing undies. You have to help your father who gambled all his money. The only way to avoid bankruptcy is to restore the order system of the DocMcVonSpaceBurger fast food empire. The game itself consists of a single screen, with one, very thorough puzzle. The twist is that any action you take in one game is mirrored in the other. In the first run, Kami is completely in Japanese and thus impossible to solve if you haven't mastered the language. When you complete the DocMcVonSpaceBurger puzzle, however, the Japanese text is translated and you can start a second run. Each of the two puzzles (top part and bottom part) can be solved individually, but based on the outcome (fail both, solve one, solve both), there are different endings. Even though all actions are mirrored, there are a few tricks involving switches, colours, and different axes granting a little amount of control over the different effects. In Kami, you need to rearrange the fragments of a story based on deceit. In DocMcVonSpaceBurger, the main challenge is to find out the customers' needs and provide the right capsules. Both games have distinctly different art: the top game has a stylish oriental look, while the fast food empire is very cartoony. If you manage to crack both puzzles simultaneously, you are given a code to add your name to the hall of completion on the developer's website.

Yin-Yang: X-Change Alternate / Yin-Yang! Another X-Change
Crowd / Peach Princess
[top]
This is an adult-oriented bishoujo adventure game and fourth in the X-Change series but plot and storyline are entirely different and have no connection at all. The US Peach Princess version features the original 2004 game Japanese voices along with English translation. Kaoru Sakurazuka is a normal Japanese young man, not unique in the least except for his oddly feminine facial features, which drive him crazy. His name doesn't thrill him either - Kaoru is a common name for both girls and boys. He tries to make up for looking like a girl by wearing an extra coating of male bravado wherever he goes. He enjoys his time at school with his friends Touya and Renji. Lately, Kaoru has been feeling under the weather, and getting dizzy spells. He goes to the school nurse -- who's also famous for inventing new concoctions in the name of science -- and accidentally drinks a vial marked "experimental medicine." Bad move, Kaoru-kun! The next day, Kaoru is shocked to wake up to find that he's been transformed into a girl! While he desperately tries to find a way to return to normal, he's forced to spend his days in his new female body. Kaoru is surprised at the changes in his environment now that he's a girl. Everywhere he goes, he's the center of attention, and it seems that everyone is taking an interest in him now. What's more, Kaoru's body has an amazing secret that he has yet to discover. What strange adventures are in store for Kaoru in his new body?

Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure
Collective, The / Atari Europe S.A.S.U.
[top]
Contents Under Pressure is an action adventure that combines stealth and combat, as you guide urban graffiti artist Trane to fame. In the oppressed city of New Radius, you need to establish your name as an artist by laying down tags, burners and full pieces, but rival crews and law enforcement (Civil Conduct Keepers) are always on your tail. You will also uncover a conspiracy that plagues the city. The game is story-driven with linear level progression. Most missions have platform elements and require you to lay art, varying from tags and stickers to complex pieces with full color, lettering and characters, on often difficult to reach surfaces. As it is not a friendly environment, Trane can deliver a host of punch and kick combos, use grabs, humiliate other artists, and interact with the surroundings. Your art arsenal includes markers, brushes, cans and rollers. All available pieces are kept in your black book, and new styles are unlocked while playing. The title refers to working your way up the scene, as well as the "Get In, Get Up, and Get Out" principle - you need to gain access to restricted areas, get up on tall objects where your work can be seen, and get out afterwards without being caught. Good spots can be tracked using Intuition, and appear as coloured clouds. The game is conceived by clothing impresario Marc Ecko, founder of the suburban designer label Ecko and is intended to pay tribute to graffiti culture and its history. Artists such as Cope2, Futura and Seen contributed art to the game.

Ubi Soft
[top]
When his world is threatened by a devastating invasion of crazed, out-of-control bunnies, Rayman must rise up against these furry foes and foil their wicked plans. Using an array of amazing new abilities, and with the help of magical creatures, Rayman will need to break out all his best moves to save his world from these delirious bunnies and their hare-raising antics. After planning since time immemorial, waiting for the day they could make their presence known and take over the world, the Rabbids come out from their underground home. So far, their plans are successful; they have attacked and imprisoned the populace, including Rayman. Rayman discovers that by performing various "trials" he becomes popular among the Rabbids, more so than their obese emperor, and he can use this to his advantage and save the world. The game will feature 80 trials of varying gameplay. There will be 50 mini-game trials, 10 FPS-style trials, 10 dancing trials and 10 race trials. Rayman can manipulate various creatures including sharks, eagles, rhinos, spiders, and angelfish, as a means of transportation. Rayman can change his appearance to reflect those of punk, pop, rock, hip hop, goth, clown, disco and others. As the game progresses, Rayman will earn various items with which he can customize both his own appearance as well as his jail cell, in order to make it increasingly luxurious. It is also where the game's many unlockables and secrets can be acessed. The Rabbids are the common enemy in this game. Their weaponry varies from highly technological (rabbit-eared spaceships equipped with lasers) to the inane (toilet plungers, toilet brushes or draining ladles). The Rabbid Emperor is to be Rayman's arch nemesis in this game. He strongly resembles Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars.
