Agon Ep3:Pirates Of Madagascar
Private Moon Studios
[top]
In the third in the episodic adventures from Hungarian developers available through online download for $10, each episode is a tightly focused, self-contained adventure with an emphasis on exploration and puzzles. Professor Samuel Hunt, the historian from the British Museum whose mission in 1903 is to track down twelve accursed games in an effort to unravel the sinister legend of the AGON. In Pirates of Madagascar, our returning middle-aged professor pulls ashore near a small fishing village. Believing the board game he seeks to be in the possession of the local chief, Hunt soon discovers that the game has long since been stolen by pirates and hidden somewhere in the jungle. Accused of being a (rather well-mannered and articulate) pirate himself, but without a map where X marks the spot, Hunt must decipher clues and solve a complex series of puzzles to locate the buried "treasure". The gameplay in Madagascar is also very solid, and easily improved over the last episode. There are more inventory puzzles in this installment, making for a better balance between practical solutions and abstract problem solving this time around. Several puzzles require piecing together clues from multiple sources, which proves challenging, but certainly fair.

Anacondas: 3D Adventure Game
Sony

It's peculiar that they'd make a game based on a B-level horror movie sequel but hey - they also made one for an even more obscure one called Pumpkinhead: Bloodwings, so anything is possible. A small group of scientists ventures far into the interiors of Borneo to collect the legendary Blood Orchid. Along the way, perilous dangers are encountered. See if you can lead the team out of danger and complete the mission. At least the game is free, hehe.

Atlantis Evolution
Atlantis Interactive Entertainment / Adventure Company
[top]
This title is from a European developer formed by a lot of the people responsible for Cryo after that company went bankrupt. It's the first in what is to be a new series of games based on the fabled city. The story begins in 1904 with the hero, photographer Curtis Hewitt, returning home from a trip to Patagonia aboard an old wreck of a ship called the Lemuria. The ship goes down in a storm and Curtis survives in a lifeboat, only to be sucked down a whirlpool. What happens next has to be seen to be believed, but soon afterward Curtis ends up in "New Atlantis" and must find a way not only to get back home, but to free the Atlantean population from their terrible bloodthirsty "gods." The game has gorgeously beautiful graphics but the free flowing cutscene sequences are interrupted by 2D mini-game arcade sequences that are so vastly different from what we have been seeing that they are actually jolting in appearance. These mini-games include variations of Choplifter, Pong, Frogger, Hanoi Towers and others. The rationale behind including these mini-games is that they are always in the context of a machine that must be reprogrammed or defeated if the hero is to progress. It also has a jungle maze and timed section where you have to flee from guards while looking for items which can be frustrating.

When you arrive Grifit has gone but he has left you a note telling you to prepare the journey ship and to activate the navigational map. The environments are gorgeous, very accessible, yet alien enough to make you believe you're in another dimension. The puzzles are good throughout and run the gamut, from inventory, to logic, to symbolist, to ritualistic. It reminds of the best parts of the Myst series though the plot could have been more developed.

Ben Jordan Paranormal Investigator Case 1-7
Francisco Gonzalez / Grundislav Games
[top]
This free horror adventure series is made with the AGS engine. Ben Jordan, a young man from Philadelphia, is fresh out of college and has decided to become a paranormal investigator. Each case finds him traveling to a different location, investigating local legends and paranormal phenomena. Join Ben on his adventures as he discovers that there's more to being a paranormal investigator than just exploring old buildings and photographing orbs. 2004 - Case 1: In Search of the Skunk-Ape Ben's first case finds him in the Florida Everglades, looking for something known as "The Skunk-Ape" which is said to be a local variation on Bigfoot. The Skunk-Ape got its name because of its horrible smell, described as a mixture of moldy cheese, rotten eggs, and dung. Several park rangers have been murdered, and so Ben is called in to investigate the possibility that the Skunk-Ape is involved. In 2006, a Deluxe Edition was made that features improved graphics, extended storyline, and full voice acting and lip-synch. Case 2: The Lost Galleon of the Salton Sea Ben is called out to the tiny desert town of Dunesberg, California, to investigate the disappearance of a local man who went out searching for the Lost Galleon, a Spanish treasure ship said to be located somewhere beneath the sands. 2005 - Case 3: The Sorceress of Smailholm The tiny village of Smailholm, Scotland has seen better days. Recently, two little girls have been murdered and the locals suspect the work of witches. In what may be his toughest case yet, Ben must figure out what happened to the children and discover if the witch rumors are true. Case 4: Horror at Number 50 Ben finds himself investigating the mysterious Number 50, Berkeley Square, London. The site of several ghost stories, infamous for its famous "horror," paranormal activity at Number 50 has been dormant for nearly 100 years until now. 2006 - Case 5: Land of the Rising Dead After the events in London, Ben Jordan returns home for a much needed rest. One day, he receives a conference call from his friends Simon Booth and Alice Wilkins. Simon has heard of a series of murders in Osaka, Japan, and thinks there is some sort of paranormal activity involved. Ben, Simon, and Alice travel to Japan, but soon find there is much more to the story than they first thought. 2007 - Case 6: Scourge of the Sea People Following the events in Japan, the paranormal investigating trio decides a vacation is in order. Traveling to Greece, they find themselves in the remote fishing village of Agia Anna. However, it seems that ancient creatures of legend known as the Sea People have been emerging from the ocean at night and dragging villagers down to the depths to eat them. 2008 - Case 7: The Cardinal Sins It's Christmas Eve in Rome. What should be a joyful occasion becomes a senseless tragedy as a priest is murdered in cold blood. Back home in Philadelphia, Ben Jordan receives a phone call from the man accused of the crime, begging him to go to Rome and clear his name. Seeing this as a chance to prove his career choice to his disapproving family, Ben calls up his friends and starts another investigation. However, Ben doesn't realize that this will be the toughest case he's ever had, as many questions will be answered, and some lives will be lost.

Cirque De Zale
Rebecca Clements
[top]
In this free AGS made game, you play an obnoxious, sarcastic young man named Alexander Zale who works at the circus as an "elephant-feces removal operative." One day, his life takes a turn for the surreal when he is transported to another dimension by a disgruntled magician. Upon arrival, Zale decides he likes the look of this new world (which is a quaint, fantasyesque affair), and decides to set up his very own circus - the Cirque De Zale of the title. In the game, we play as Alexander as he struggles to find and acquire his circus, along with the requisite staff. The game shares a few similarities with the Monkey Island games, mainly the SCUMM-like interface and the excellent low-resolution graphics and there are also lots of animations. The game's strongest point is definitely its humour, which is sometimes subtle and occasionally laugh-out-loud hilarious. The conversations with the other characters are excellent, with Zale delivering some brilliant sarcastic put-downs.

Clever & Smart: A Movie Adventure / Mortadelo y Filemón: Una Aventura de Cine
Alcachofa Soft / Crimson Cow
[top]
This is based on popular Spanish comics characters. When Dr. Bacterio tests his new invention with which he can extract anything from movies and make it a real object, he doesn't bring out the famous treasure of the mummy but the mummy Impoteh himself. Since he's a little cranky and wants to take over the world, beginning with the basement of the T.I.A headquarter, Mortadelo and Filemón have to stop him. To do so, they need to enter Dr. Bacterio's machine and get the book of the dead. But since nothing is perfect, they don't land in the right movie and so they've to make their way through several other movies where they meet famous actors like Charlie Chaplin, John Wayne or Humphrey Bogart. The game is a normal Point & Click adventure where you've to find items with which you can solve the riddles in the game and talk to various characters (some already known to the readers of the comic). But since Mortadelo and Filemón are a team, you can always switch between both characters. Everyone has different abilities. For example Mortadelo can disguise himself to distract someone while Filemón steals an item from the person. As a feature, never seen in an adventure before, there's also a multiplayer-mode available where one person takes control over Mortadelo and the other over Filemón.

The Dead City
NiHiLiS Games

Several megabytes containing slighty moronic, pseudo-philosophical texts, depressive moody graphics and an ambient melancholic music, an absurd story and primitive puzzles. All of this awaits you in this 1st person 2D adventure game. Just out of an asylum, where the player has been since his one true love was the victim of an apparent ritualistic murder, he only wants to drown out the pain with alcohol and morphine, and to exact justice for the memory of his girlfriend. In the process of this quest, he'll visit a number of (intentionally) bleak, dismal locations that are all realized in a striking visual style. It's created using the Wintermute Engine. The audiovisual aspect of the game is provided through a simple 3D art and an original ambient music created specifically for this game. This is a multilingual version which includes English, Czech, Italian and Russian translations.

Dreamhold
Andrew Plotkin
[top]
You don't remember who you are. You are lying on a smooth cold stone floor in a small unfurnished stone cell. You are carrying a quill pen, and a there's a gap in the stone in the east wall. This is an interactive fiction tutorial game. It's designed for people who have never played IF before. It introduces the common commands and mindset of text adventures, one step at a time. There's an extensive help system describing standard IF commands, as well as dynamic hints which pop up whenever you seem to be stuck. Of course, you can turn off the hints and the tutorials, and play The Dreamhold as a real game. The puzzles are not extremely difficult, but they should offer some challenge to both experienced players and newcomers. (If the challenge is insufficient, there's an "expert" mode which makes some of the puzzles harder.) There are also many optional bits to explore beyond the main storyline. The author tried to create a game which rewards many species of adventurer: the inexperienced newcomer, the puzzle-hurdler, the casual tourist, the meticulous explorer, the wild experimenter, the seeker after nuances and implications.

After one particularly unsuccessful day, he gets a tempting offer from a stranger in a bar. The stranger introduces himself as William Mayfield, son of an oil tycoon. His father had drilled for oil in Greenland, but after some mysterious events and sightings, abandoned the drilling station. Mayfield offers Mike and Sarah $10,000 for joining him on an expedition to the abandoned station to find out whether it is indeed haunted. Mike doesn't hesitate to take this offer and soon finds himself, along with a number of scientists and "paranormal investigators", on his way to Greenland. On their way to the station, the helicopter pilot passes out and while Mike manages to land the helicopter without anyone getting hurt, the helicopter is crashed. Trapped in the station until the helicopter is repaired, it doesn't take long for everyone to find out that there are indeed strange things going on around the station. Enclosure was made using the New Adventure Game Interpreter (Nagi) based on Sierra's Adventure Game Interpreter (AGI). The player can control Mike's movements using the arrow keys or the mouse. All other commands (e.g. open door, get fishing rod etc.) have to be typed in. It's a very fun murder mystery/horror game with a lot of sci-fi trappings.

Haunted House
Apocalyptic Coders
[top]
Haunted House is a fanmade remake of the Atari 2600 title of the same name. Your job is to collect a secret urn from the haunted house of Zacharey Graves. The house consists of 24 rooms, spanning 4 floors. Each room is completely dark, but an unlimited amount of matches has been provided. The main character, which was nothing but a pair of eyes in the original, has been replaced with a male protagonist. He has a scare meter which is filled with frights upon touching enemies such as ghosts, giant spiders and bats. A total of nine scares is fatal. Using a top-down view, you can only see a limited area as you move about. While collecting pieces of the urn, placed at random locations each game, you can use a scepter to become invisible and a key to open locked doors, but it is not possible to carry more than one item at a time. A new addition in this 2004 version are light switches. These can be used to lighten up the rooms completely, but fans of the original can disable this feature. The final score is based on the amount of matches used, the number of scares and the gameplay time.

A hacker prowling around different secured areas and accessing encrypted memory banks in the atmospheric confines of a space station, gradually getting up to speed with the rich backstory from the log entries of disappeared crew members recounting the ongoing development of an uncooperative military artificial intelligence (the ASD Project of the SGDS - Sentient Global Defense System)... playing this game, you could be forgiven for mistakenly believing you were in a missing chapter from the System Shock series. Unlike its spiritual predecessors, however, this game features no combat or RPG elements -- instead it is a game of narrative exploration from the perspective of a Mystian 1st-person adventurer. As the player learns more about Dr. Leonard Eaves' principled opposition to the Crusade Project, storywise it also delivers a more philosophical and nuanced take on the hackneyed dark-SF subject matter, perhaps closer to the work of interactive fiction A Mind Forever Voyaging. It is more than a little mysterious. Where exactly is everybody, exactly? And what role does the player occupy in this allegorical setting, precisely? The game isn't going to spell it out for you; instead, between rummaging through refuse for passwords and 23-bit encryption keys, it'll make you reflect a bit on the true nature of intelligence and consciousness.

Larry Lovage learned everything he knows from his uncle, Larry Laffer, the famous polyester-clad fellow who starred in the previous games. Young Larry finally makes it to college, the best place to meet and pick up girls. He finds them everywhere... in restaurants, night clubs, dormitories and at fraternity parties. All those scantilly clad, gorgeous babes! But, does Larry have half a chance to score with even one of them? Will he get a peek at what's underneath that braless, too-tight tank top? Larry's sexcapades include varied types of arcade mini-games. Some simply require good reflexes while others involve memory and/or correct timing. For instance, steer a little joker sperm through an obstacle course of flying objects, all the while trying to keep the "course" of the conversation on track. Or .. put the correct ingredients into a bar drink in order - and in the time allowed. Several of the games become more difficult as the game progresses. This action/adventure features three endings, over 20 locations, 3D graphics, and hilarious adult situations and conversations. Fans were disappointed in the lack of adventure elements and the absence any input and humor from the series creator, Al Lowe. A totally uncensored version was released a few months after the original release. Several of the girls appear naked and there are secret tokens found throughout the game which unlock even more "interesting" mini-games, loading screens and nude models if the player visits the right shop in-game.

Necrotic Drift
Jolt Country
[top]
Necrotic Drift is a fun graphical "survival horror text adventure" that plays like a modern cross between From Dusk Till Dawn and Underworld movies. Like Sherwin's previous game Fallacy of Dawn, the game is set in New Haz, a fictional-yet-familiar city in modern day New Jersey. You play Jarret Duffy, a 20-something geek who works at Benji's Gaming and Role-Gaming Emporium as assistant manager. The game begins on an ordinary night, with you and your roommates trying to decide which DVDs to rent for the evening. Not soon after, all hell breaks loose with various undeads that look like they come out of the latest AD&D rulebook. Like Fallacy of Dawn but even more successfully, Necrotic Drift is oozing to the brim with atmosphere. Well-written dialogues and descriptions let you know Jarret, his friends, and his world inside out like few other text adventures could. Most game fans will have a blast playing this game just to spot the numerous references to tabletop RPGs, computer games, and comics. What makes the game even more fun is the fact that the zombies, lichs, and other undeads in this game actually CAN be defeated by means described in TSR's D&D rules! While the clues are sufficient, die-hard pen & paper RPG fans will know almost instinctively what they need to defeat the monsters. Most puzzles are basic and simple - you just need to whack the monsters with the right weapon in the first few stages of the game to kill them. These puzzles are made even simpler by the game's extreme linearity: most times you have only one objective to focus on (usually of the "defeat this wandering undead" nature) and few areas to explore. On the other hand, easy puzzles mean you will not get stuck so often, which means the plot will unfold much faster - making the game an even better approximation of survival horror movies in which events happen in the space of few seconds. The last few puzzles in the game are more intricate and complex, but text adventure experts will have no problem overall with the game. The game makes good use of graphics and sounds. Every location, monster, and NPC is depicted in photorealistic pictures, and some sounds really make you jump out of your seat (it's almost as scary as The Lurking Horror).

No-Action Jackson
cerebrit (Britton O'Toole)
[top]
A freeware masterpiece that no adventure gamer should ignore, this is a superb point-and-click freeware adventure game that could have been packaged in a box, stamped with LucasArts' logo and put on retail shelves. Yes, the game is THAT good. For starters, the game puts you in a role that most of us are familiar with, although strangely enough has not been used in many games: you play a young geek named Jackson who must escape his house to join a fun D&D gaming session with his friends at a local comic book/game store. The first thing you will notice about the game is how good the graphics are. Similar to Day of the Tentacle, excellent hand-drawn VGA graphics that are chock full of detail in every scene fully brings Jackson's world to life. And they are not just pretty scenery, either: have fun clicking LOOK on various items in Jackson's room just to read funny, item-specific descriptions that are many notches better than the "you see nothing special" response you get in a typical adventure game. Everything in this game screams "labor of love" - the designer anticipates a lot of verb+object possibilities, and builds in clever retorts in response. There are also many sound effects to add to the atmosphere. The puzzles are quite fun to solve, and a few are even quite memorable for their ingenuity. In the best LucasArts decision, the most challenging puzzles in the game require you to pay close attention to the scene, observe how NPCs behave, and use the right object(s) at the right time. There is some pixel-hunting (especially clicking on the right TV cable), but fortunately the crosshairs-shaped cursor makes it possible to click on the exact pixel you want. To round things off, both the plot and pacing are also very well-designed: the game is split into a few short "episodes," each of which is introduced by a short cut-scene. Your goal in the first portion of the game is to get out of the house, so you are limited to using objects in various rooms. After your successful escape, the game 'opens up' considerably with many more areas to explore, and even a bit of non-linearity (i.e. you can choose which friend to 'rescue' first). It's very funny, very professional-looking, and even has challenging puzzles to boot.

Other Worlds
Alkis Polyrakis
[top]
One of the longest freeware adventure games ever made, Other Worlds is a fun point-and-click adventure from Greece that boasts a sprawling gameworld, captivating plot, solid writing (inspired by Stephen King's Dark Tower series to boot), hundreds of mostly-logical puzzles, and interesting NPCs. You play Natalia, a 27 year-old woman who comes home one day to find that her boyfriend Alkis has gone missing. After discovering a strange message, you will shortly find out there are other worlds than ours, and traversing those 'parallel universes' is imperative to finding Alkis again. At first glance, the game looks very amateurish - largely thanks to garish graphics that don't mesh together very well. It is probably one of the best, if not the best, adventures of 2004 – and that includes both Independent and commercial - and its minor flaws do not take away anything from the overall impact. It is an adventure that has all it takes to become a classic. No, you will not find breathtaking graphics, lip-synced speech or quadraphonic music performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. What you will find is a fantastic story that will unfold before you minute by minute with enough twists and turns to keep your interest peaked at all time; characters that seem so real that you will become attached to them and will not forget them for a long, long time (if ever!); and very clever and balanced puzzles to keep your brain churning full speed ahead. And all that garnished with a great deal of humor, that will have you rolling on the floor laughing – that is, if you can appreciate good humor. In other words, a model adventure game, created by an adventurer for adventurers.

Peasant's Quest
Mike Chapman & Matt Chapman
[top]
Peasant's Quest is a humorous, hugely entertaining 2D adventure that plays like Sierra's classic King's Quest games. Here is the official plot: "A real long time ago, in the peasant kingdom of Peasantry, some people lived... in fear. You are Rather Dashing, (a peasant wearing short pants) who returns from a vacation to find his thatched cottage.....BURNINATED! You set out on a quest to get revenge on Trogdor once and for all. So will he make it, staying alive, and protecting this peasant kingdom from burnination? YOU decide!!!" The game was clearly designed as a parody of Sierra's King's Quest games, and there is plenty of jokes to put a smile on your face. It not only looks like an early King's Quest title, but it also plays like one (although to its credit, the puzzles are far better.... in a weird, warped-logic way). You type commands like TALK MAN or LOOK ROCK on the text parser at the bottom of the screen, while moving your protagonist around with the arrow keys. Although the game is rather short, it does feature more than a handful of clever puzzles (including some that are quite cruel but funny in a black-humor way), and a pretty good parser that was coded from the ground up in Macromedia's Flash. You can also save your game in progress (browser cookies must be enabled), see where you are on the in-game map (once you find it), and read funny descriptions of inventory items. Memorable characters, fun puzzles, and solid coding make Peasant's Quest one of the best freeware adventure games in recent years, its short length - I finished the game in about 45 minutes - notwithstanding.

Principles of Evil Volume I + II
divot
[top]
This series of two games are free AGS adventures. Volume 1 - You play as Rogata (Rogi for short), a young taxidermist who dabbles in the dark arts. She's fed up with the daily grind and decides to set off on a mission to find her idol (and it ain't Clay Aiken). She sets off on a journey to find Babayaga: the world's most evil witch. Volume 2: Misery Loves Company (released 2007) Taxidermist Rogata continues her journey away from boredom searching for the evil witch Babayaga who can further teach her dark arts. The story picks up after Rogi has fallen through a hole in the earth. As the story continues, she meets strange creatures and even a potential love interest. Just like the first game, it is entirely mouse-controlled. The right mouse button is used to switch between actions icon (examine, pick up, use, talk), while the left mouse button executes the selection function. Rogi can explore different environments to talk to other characters. Music was not included in the initial release of the game, but added afterwards.

Project Xenophobe
Sektor 13
[top]
You play a soldier sent by the military to investigate mysterious happenings at an isolated military base. The game is made with AGS (Adventure Game Studio) and riddled with many grammatical errors, typos, and awkward sentences - mainly because the author is not a native English speaker. But the rest of the game is so well put together that you will be willing to forgive this otherwise-crucial aspect of adventure games. Besides, the typos and grammatical errors are not so severe as to frustrate you - they are just annoying to observe. The puzzles, plot development, and graphics in Project Xenophobe are all excellent, even if some puzzles are too easy or mundane. The game builds up the excitement very well - so well, in fact, that you will be pleasantly surprised by either of the two endings in the game, both of which are appropriately climactic. Add to this atmospheric music (largely from Vangelis' 1492 album), minimal but effective sound effects, and some neat plot twists, Project Xenophobe is well worth playing, and comes recommended to every adventure gamer who is willing to forgive poor grammar in well-designed games.

[top]
Remedy is an adventure game about the English girl Carol Reed housesitting for a friend in Sweden. When her detective friend Conrad Vogel passes away, she decides to try and solve the case he was working on before he died. Her investigations trigger more questions than they answer. It is a story-driven, first person point-and-click mystery game with inventory-based puzzles. Graphics consist of real photographs, shot in Norrkoping, Sweden, with a waterpainting filter overlay. All spoken dialogue is in English, and also subtitled in English. During the story, new locations will open up which can be travelled to via a map. The game is entirely controlled through the left mouse button. The default cursor changes to a magnifying glass or a hand when an item can be examined, used or picked up. To move between locations, arrows appear near the sides of the screen when the mouse is hovered in that direction. Collected items appear at the top of the screen. Carol can talk to other characters, using the dialogue options that appear at the bottom of the screen.

Sigma
Alan Thorn
[top]
This free adventure, Sigma, reminds of Cryo's Atlantis in many ways, including the interface and gameplay style. The story is very vague at first, and actually it stays that way all the time. It has only one goal: to keep the player in uncertainity, to give him minimum of information, and to keep him tense so that he has the right motivation for solving mechanical puzzles. At first you don't even know who the main character is, so you have no choice but to start exploring the strange bunker and rooms you're trapped in. The initial explorations will reveal several messages, strange rooms with levers and switches and above all - a movable cube with four difficult puzzles, which make the real frame of the game. Sigma doesn't contain any dialogues or any significant item interaction, so it could be compared to 7th Guest or newer Schizm, where the progress is bound to logical puzzles. That means it's basically a logical game spiced up by a few adventure game elements. The puzzles are well thought out (even though the well known one with eight queens on the chessboard probably won't impress anyone anymore) and fun. Besides, for a freeware game Sigma can offer a luxurious art, which would leave the authors of the first multimedia projects like Rama, 7th Guest, 9 or Lighthouse green with envy. The rooms are not numerous, that's true, but they look really great and all the objects can be zoomed in and examined in detail. Unfortunately the controls are not very good. The game uses the Omni 3D principle, i.e. a free look, but the movement is only limited to several fixed points so it can be hard to navigate even in a simple room. Sigma also has a pleasant ambient music, which fits the quiet and chilling atmosphere and helps to build the tension. In any way the adventure game lovers will pe pleased with this truly outstanding project.

Steer Madness

Steer Madness is like the animal activist version of Grand Theft Auto. Cruising on your environmentally friendly bicycle to the accompaniment of a driving rock soundtrack, you, Bryce the Steer, race to complete timed missions of breaking-and-entering, theft, and sabotage in an attempt to force your city to go vegan and animal-friendly. Framing the missions is a poignant, if somewhat sparse, story about your escape from a slaughter-house bound truck and adaptation to life as a free animal, and growth and then sad ending of your friendship with the vegan girl who took you in. A 3D action-adventure game with a veggie agenda in which you play a cow and save the environment and other animal friends. Players explore the world in-between completing 'animal friendly' missions, such as freeing animals from a cosmetics lab. The game offers an alternative to the violent and anti-social behaviour found in many games. Players can't shoot or kill, are unable to die, and can only move around the world using environmentally friendly transport such as bicycles and an electric powered sports car. The game also features a cinematic introduction, and a soundtrack featuring independent musicians such as Hector and The Winks.

Two Of A Kind
Dave Gilbert
[top]
This is a free adventure made with AGS (Adventure Game Studio). Bluff City is a town of unusual people, with unusual abilitles. Tim and Tiffany Walters are fraternal twins, born and raised in Bluff City. After a traumatic childhood (which they don't talk about), they became extremely close and depend on each other for everything. To pay the bills, they have opened a Private Investigator business. Their current case is to locate a mysterious crystal. The price of failure? Only the end of the world. Timothy Walters has the special power of levitation. Tim acts like an older brother to his sister Tiffany, despite the fact that he was born three minutes after her. He is strangely overprotective of her, and is constantly making sure that she's okay. He is very moody, often depressed, and looks at the world through jaded, cynical eyes. His one joy comes from listening to rock music. He is particularly fond of KISS; he has all their CDs and has even met some of the members. Tiffany Walters has the special power of talking to animals. Tiffany is cheerful, happy-go-lucky and childish. Not only is the glass constantly half full for her, but it's also pink with smiley faces drawn on it. She is obsessed with stuffed animals, of which she has many, and believes that she can always get her way by saying "Please!" often enough. Tiffany is always trying to get her brother Tim to have fun, which usually consists of a game of Candy-Land. Using a classic click-and-point interface, both Tim and Tiffany can be guided. The bottom right corner holds their portraits where they can be selected individually. Tim has the ability to float and Tiffany talks with animals, two important powers needed to solve the puzzles. Visiting locations such as a mansion, a cave, a store, a farm and the home office, the two need to combine items, examine the environment and talk to other characters to discover the crystal's location, which ultimately leads to a more sinister plot.

Unshadowed
P. J. Richmond
[top]
This is a free action-adventure made with Game Maker from amateur developer P. J. Richmond. The game makes up for its amateurish (and probably too cartoonish, given the subject matter) graphics with excellent puzzles that adventure fans will enjoy. The action is also not too frustratingly difficult, although you do have to be good at aiming the mouse. The story involves Wade, who unwittingly finds himself in pursuit of a mysterious villain named Redlaw through the game's eight chapters. As he goes, he learns more about his family's involvement in the struggle between the power of light he wields and the darkness his enemy uses against him. The author describes the gameplay in Unshadowed as a "mix of shooting and puzzle solving." This is a fair summary, as you find yourself about half the time fighting enemies large and small in action sequences, and the other half solving the game's many puzzles. You move using the arrow keys and use the mouse to aim your attacks and use the other magical abilities that you gain from time to time. The game's graphics are all original and quite varied. It becomes obvious early on for this and other reasons that a lot of work went into Unshadowed. The graphical style sort of reminds me of things someone might draw in a notebook in school--rough at times, but colorful, detailed, and effective at making the game's world believable. This is also supported by well-placed music and sounds. Back to the puzzles, this is a high point in the game. None are all that difficult, but there are many and each is unique and integrated very well with the areas. The abilities you gain as you progress not only aid you in battle but become an essential part of the puzzles. It has rough edges in places and room for improvement, but it consistently presents you with fun and varied situations to the end.

Betrapped!
Oberon Games, Inc.

After the death of Lord North Vandernot of Ravencourt Castle, a young American girl named May Vandernot was left his entire estate. Jealousy brewed within the household and May feels that someone is trying to kill her. Upon hearing the news, Chief Inspector Parker of Scotland Yard decide to visit Ravencourt Castle and personally see to it that the girl remains unharmed and her would-be murderer be arrested before he/she can perform any evil deed. When Parker arrived, a great storm had him and the 12 people staying at the castle stranded. Parker discovered that May might be right because the rooms in the castle are all festered with deadly booby-traps. So before he can do any sleuthing, he will have to carefully disarm the traps. Hopefully, Inspector Parker will survive long enough to crack this case and apprehend the villain. This is a whodunit puzzle game where you guide Inspector Parker through the many rooms and floors of Ravencourt Castle in order to gather enough clues and evidence to pinpoint who the villain is. In terms of gameplay, the game is like a dish of minesweeper and a small side of adventure. When first entering a room, you will have to disarm the booby traps there. This is the minesweeper part. As you walk around the room, the tiles nearby will light up into a certain color. Blue means no traps are adjacent to the tile, green means one is adjacent, yellow means two and so forth. Base on these clues, you have to determine where these traps are and disarm them with a right click. Special traps act a bit differently: a Flashing Skull Trap indicates a hidden trap that can only be disarmed by finding the remote weapon aimed at it. If you step on one of them, you can save yourself by quickly stepping off. A timed trap must be disarmed before time runs out. Every time you are struck by a trap or right-clicked the wrong tile you will lose a life. If you run out of lives, then you will have to restart that room. Adventure part: When you finish disarming the room, you can start exploring it. By pressing the spacebar, you will see what can be interacted with. If you see a guest there, talk to them and find out as much as you can. Many times, by clicking a vent, you will hear secret conversation between guests. Also, by digging around, you will find items to put in your inventory. At the end of the game, you will have to determine who the killer is and what clues were use to solve the case. If you are more into the disarming-traps part of the game, you can always play in puzzle mode which offers 3 different difficulty settings. Here you will keep solving puzzles that gets progressively harder.

[top]
A classic story of betrayal and revenge unravels in Catwoman, based on the Warner Bros. Pictures feature film of the same name. Gamers will control Halle Berry as Catwoman as they play the movie, utilizing her unique cat-like skills, senses and cunning to defeat her enemies. Catwoman is based upon the DC Comics character. Boasting incredible acrobatic skills, Catwoman can leap across roofs, run up walls, pounce on prey, utilize unique "cat senses," and avoid enemy bullets with feline grace. In addition, she can use her whip to swing through the air and utilize the fully interactive enviroments to trap or knock her foes unconcious. The game will take players through numerous levels set in seven different locations from the movie, including the jewelery store, the Hedare Factory, and Hedare's mansion and grounds. Gamers will encounter all the key characters from the movie, including three challenging bosses: Armando, Hedare's head henchman; Wesley, the evil and twisted Hedare accountant; and Laurel Hedare, the beautiful face behind the evil empire. Players will view the world from a feline point of view and utilize unique cat attributes that allow Catwoman to change the odds to her advantage. These powers enable her to see in the dark (unlike her foes) and hunt her prey by seeing footprints and smelling trails that reveal where they have been and what they have done. Catwoman can also use her Sixth Sense to establish threats around her and even predict what her enemy may do next. Catwoman can use her whip to throw or topple objects; smash breakable items; trigger interactive objects remotely; climb, descend and swing from structures; and even rescue herself from incredible death falls in the rooftop levels.

The Revelation is an addon free for the internet download release of Demise v1.01. It adds more of everything to the game: 3 new levels to explore, 60+ new items, 70+ new monsters, 3 new guilds quests, new monster/item only spells. As well as the new content it offers many bug fixes and tweaks. To fully experience the expansion (to play in new areas) it is recommended you have at least one character with one or more guilds at level 300+. In other words, you need to be comfortable on levels 28, 29 and be able to go one on one with The Ku'tan Jenal. But even if you are not ready to try the new areas, the changes and fixes in existing levels alone are worth the upgrade.

Disney's Lion King 2: Simba's Pride Game Break
Disney Interactive
[top]
This is a fun game, but I think only one of its four selections will really find a lot of long-term play with the youngsters in your home. The best selection by far is the Paddle Bash, which we played forever. It's a mixture of Pong and Breakout. Each player has a paddle on either side of the screen (like Pong) and must break rocks and blocks (like Breakout)in order to get to the planks which are needed by Timon and Pumbaa to build a bridge to reach a rock on which rests a tasty snack of the bug variety. Each player is in control of one of them, and whoever gets their bridge finished first wins that round. When playing against the computer, you must score more points than it to move to the next round. This game is a lot of fun, and each round introduces more and more complexity. Pretty soon you encounter bricks which can be broken after a few hits as well as bricks which are unbreakable. You're both paddling against the same group of planks and blocks in the center of the screen, so your ball can go through an opening and be used by the other player to gain some ground while you wait for it to come back or for him to send his ball to you. It's a very smart twist on two old but great games, and I think that's why it's so much fun. Swampberry Sling, in which you fling berries with a slingshot at various targets, is enjoyable but repetitive after a while. The same with Conga Longa, in which you must gather animals into a conga line. Different animals earn different bonuses in each level and they increase in number as you progress, but it's not that difficult. The final selection, Cub Chase, is probably the second best one. In it you must evade Timon and Pumbaa, who are your babysitters, while leaving tracks throughout a maze. Once you've left tracks on all the paths you can head for the exit and the next maze. This has some gameplay dynamics which are similar to Pac-Man, and that aspect makes it a fun game. For example, you can grab a hyena mask and scare the babysitters, which confuses them for a while, or you can run through a mud puddle to disguise yourself. Each maze is different, which adds to the complexity. Overall, this is a title which kids will enjoy, but only one or two of the four selections will keep them putting this CD back in the drive.

Fifth Disciple, The
Napoleon Games / Cenega Publishing / TopWare
[top]
Help Engeor, a student at the University of Magic, save Rovenland from the evil wizard Wahargem. In the beginning of the game Engeor accidently says something against the evil wizard and finds himself in a prison camp. His first task is to free himself from the prison so he can continue on his journey to save his country and its inhabitants. The Fifth Disciple is a magical, fantasy adventure with RPG elements. The game is point and click and the puzzles are inventory based. The RPG elements are turn based combat and leveling up. The combat involves only magic spells and there are no weapons involved in the fighting and, since the combat is turn based, the player has plenty of time to select the best strategy to win the battle. When Engeor levels up, new spells can be selected or current spells can be strengthened. It's a fine synthesis of two popular computer game styles: point-and-click adventure and fantasy RPG. The game combines the two styles in a way very similar to table games where players are heroes who complete logic and story tasks as well as fight in battles with enemies. The game alternates between solving problems through objects and communication with other characters, and move-by-move battling. For every task solved and enemy defeated, Engeor is given additional experience, which can be used to improve one of 25 available spells. Those can be applied in the course of the game during combat as well as in the adventure parts.

Incredibles, The
Beenox Studios / Heavy Iron Studios / THQ
[top]
Pixar and Disney have created a number of hit movies, many of which have games created from them. Now The Incredibles joins these other titles with this action/adventure game. Like the movie, the game focuses on the retired superheroes, Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl, and their children Violet and Dashiell. The family has been living a normal, if super-powered, life in the suburbs after law suits by, ironically, people saved by superheroes led to an early retirement. Now, however, a villain has appeared that only the Incredibles can defeat. Using scenes from the movie, the game follows the Incredibles as they battle this new threat. Different levels put players in control of different family members and will have to master that character's special abilities to get through the level. Mr. Incredible's super strength means his levels involve many enemies to beat up. Elastigirl, on the other hand, must stretch to reach objects and solve puzzles on her levels. Violet's invisibility powers turn her levels into stealth missions, while Dashiell's super speed means players will be racing to beat the clock. Each of the characters will also encounter at least one boss they must defeat by using their special powers. Gamers who enjoyed the movie will have a lot of fun playing out the plot and getting to know the characters better. The levels and puzzles will provide a good amount of challenge, as will the variety of levels and five unique characters to master.

Pac-Man World 2
Bitmap Brothers, The, Namco Limited / Hip Interactive Corp.
[top]
Long ago, an evil spirit known as Spooky had terrorized all of Pac-Land. A young knight called Sir Pac-alot sealed Spooky underneath a large tree using the 5 sacred "Golden Fruit", which were attached to the branches of the tree. In the present time late at night, Inky, Pinky, Blinky and Clyde sneak into the village and, in their mischief, pluck the Golden Fruit off the tree in the center of town. Unfortunately, this has released Spooky from his prison. The big boss tells the ghosts to take the Golden Fruit and follow him if they wish to rid the land of the Pac-people forever. When Pac-Man awakes, he hears the news from Professor Pac about the Golden Fruit and Spooky, and sets off to defeat the ghosts and Spooky. The player controls Pac-Man in a 3D environment along a linear path with the simple object of reaching the end. Pac-Man World 2 has few maze-like areas unlike historical Pac-Man games which are completely comprised of mazes. The game has 20 levels and 15 mazes in 6 different environments. The plot involves Pac-Man finding five golden fruits that were stolen by ghosts. These fruits were vital to his town. Pac-Man sometimes must fight and defeat enemies in order to progress. At the end of each area is a boss. The boss is always a ghost in a giant machine, excluding the final boss. There are many items to collect in this game including cherries, strawberries, apples, melons, oranges, the traditional dots, and tokens. All of these items come from previous Pac-Man games. Not all levels contain all of the collectible items, nor do they contain the same number of each. Throughout the game Pac-Man can gather tokens that unlock old maze Pac-Man incarnations, which have been described by some as “perfect emulations”.

Even though the fights make up a large part of the game, the puzzle sections are still present and more complicated than before. A new move in the puzzle sections of the game is the curtain slide, which allows you to slide down to the ground slowly. There are still plenty of options for time manipulation and the storyline also lets you travel back and forth in time, visiting the same locations in an alternate time period.

Pyjamarama Remake
Sektor 13
[top]
Pyjamarama was a classic 1984 game published for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Commodore 64. A superb remake was done in 2004. It's an arcade adventure set across several interconnecting rooms. The player takes the role of Wally Week, who has gone to bed for the night and has to wake up early in the morning for work. Unfortunately, his alarm clock has not been wound, and thus he will sleep late in the morning, and his boss will fire him. However, in his sleep, Wally's consciousness travels around his home, and other places, wearing his pyjamas, in search for the key to rewind the alarm clock and wake himself up. The game is made up of static single-screen rooms, each of which can include platforms in various arrangements, objects to pick up, and enemies to avoid. Wally can walk through the screens to progress through the game's map and to pick up objects. Wally can only carry two items at a time, so each time he picks up an item, he drops an old item in its place. Contact with an enemy drains Wally's "snooze energy", and if it runs out, Wally loses one of his "lives". When all three "lives" are lost, Wally returns to sleep and doesn't wake up until late in the morning, losing the game.

Shrek 2
KnowWonder, Inc. / Activision Publishing, Inc.
[top]
This game based on the movie Shrek 2 is a 3D platform game with some fighting sequences. The plot follows that of the movie: newlywed ogre couple Shrek and Princess Fiona travel to Far Far Away to meet Fiona's parents, who don't approve of the marriage. The King then plots with the Fairy Godmother against Shrek, sending an assassin his way. Playing as Shrek himself, his pal the talking donkey or the cat assassin Puss in Boots, one has to navigate through large levels with occasional platform sequences, beating up enemies and collecting coins. The coins can be traded for potions at drive-through shops scattered around the levels. Nine potions are available, from healing and invisibility potions to ones that freeze enemies or turn them into frogs. Other extras to be found are four-leaf clovers, which increase maximum health, and wanted posters featuring common fairy tale characters. When three posters have been picked up, a bonus level opens up for more coin collecting.

Shrek 2 Team Action
Luxoflux Corp. / Activision Publishing, Inc.
[top]
The PC version of Shrek 2 was quite different than the console version, with simplified gameplay so that it would be more accessible to a younger audience. However, Activision decided that it should probably port the actual console version to PCs, since the tremendous commercial success of the movie might actually lure gamers to buy a second Shrek game. And so we have Shrek 2 Team Action. As the game implies, the player has several of the film's main characters at his disposal and can often switch between them, a la Sonic Heroes. Other than that, Shrek 2 TA plays more or less like most 3D platform games with several added twists: some elements of rhythm games and some searching around, for instance. The game follows the plot of the movie: Shrek and Fiona travel to Fionas' homeland of Far, Far Away Land to visit the parents. Shrek's in-laws, particularly her father, aren't too happy with their daughter's choice - so the poor ogre has to fight his way to gain their approval.

Big Idea Productions, Inc. / ValuSoft, Inc.
[top]
Playing off themes familiar from the Indiana Jones series of adventure films, this Veggie Tales PC game features Larry the Cucumber as a swashbuckling explorer. Playing the role of "Minnesota Cuke," Larry has just recovered a valuable artifact -- the "Crock of Hookie Balookie" -- as the game begins. Unfortunately, while returning to the museum with this treasure, his airplane crashes. Minnesota Cuke is not hurt in the accident, but when he arrives at the crash site, he finds that someone has taken the valuable relic. In the 15-level game of action and exploration that follows, Minnesota Cuke (and hopefully also the boys and girls who control him through the adventure) learns an important lesson about stealing. Like other Veggie Tales games, television shows, and movies, Minnesota Cuke and the Coconut Apes is by Big Idea Productions, a company dedicated to presenting values-based entertainment grounded in a Judeo-Christian world view.

Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc
Enlight Software Ltd. / Enlight Interactive Inc.
[top]
In 14th century Europe the king of England lays claim to the French throne and thus begins the hundred year war. Take control of Jeanne la Pucelle "Joan of Arc" and her fellow commanders Jean de Nouillonpont, Etienne de Vignolles and Duke of Alencon as they fight the English to recapture France and keep King Edward III from taking the throne. Joan of Arc can be described as an action role-playing game with some real-time strategy elements. Directly control Joan of Arc or one of the other commanders on missions that relive some of Joan of Arc's more important years in the war. This is the RPG side where you will combat the enemies one on one with some help from a few troops you pick up. Use combos (a series of mouse clicks like AA, AB, AAB etc.) to perform powerful attacks. Gain experience to level up and receive points to increase your stats as well as combo points to enhance your combos or learn new ones. You can switch between the four main characters anytime if they are in your group as they will gain experience and grow stronger also. As you complete more missions and become more powerful you will be able to control armies to lay siege to castles. Switch to RTS mode (an overhead isometric view) and rally your troops to fight for you then switch back to RPG mode (a third person mode for melee and first person mode for range attacks) and fight in the heart of the battle. Assign troops to each of the four main commanders and switch back and forth between them during the battle. Build siege weapons to conquer castles to once again bring France back under control from England.
