Arcane:Online Mystery Serial
Sarbakan / Warner Bros
[top]
This is a spooky free online episodic flash point-and-click mystery-solving adventure game. Prepare to be immersed into a mythological realm of suspense and mystery. Full of magic and intrigue. Truly a work of fiction in which you are a part of. There is high-voice quality and superbly detained graphics throughout the series. Season 1 is a 4-episode set called "Arcane: The Miller Estate". Season 2 is an 8-episode set called "The Stone Circle". In the beginning, only Chaos existed, and the Elder Gods ruled the universe. But as time passed, new Gods came into existence. An epic struggle followed, and the Elder Gods were stricken down, banished beyond the frontiers of the universe, and condemned to roam the dark and cold dimensions of the Uncreated for all eternity. Rage has consumed these Great Ancients ever since. They have one obsession to return to the universe from which they were exiled, and restore the reign of Chaos. Eons later a secret cult known as the Elder Star Society, lead by the mysterious Cardinal, works to help the Ancients return to this world and rule humanity. But the Society did not expect three investigators of the supernatural (Ophelia MacDermoth, Prescott Bridgeman and Gregor MacDermoth) to stumble upon their plans. The first confrontation took place at the Miller Estate in New England, where the three heroes were duped into helping the enemy. By defeating The Guardian, a dangerous native spirit who was terrorizing the estate's inhabitants, they unknowingly activated one of the nodal points that form magical triangles over the surface of the Earth. This is exactly what the Cardinal wanted when three nodes are activated, enough energy will be liberated by the gigantic mechanism to let Elder Star achieve it's dream of bringing the Great Ancients back. Arcane is inspired by the pulp serials of the 1920's and H.P. Lovecraft's "Cthulhu Mythos."

Critical Point
Sweet Basil / Will / Peach Princess
[top]
This is a hentai adventure first released in Japan in 1998 and translated for release in English in 2002. Early in the 21st century, a sudden shortage of energy and food caused World War III - the most devastating in the history of mankind. The Earth's population was reduced to 15% of its pre-war level. Some years later, four powerful organizations control the Earth and the Moon. Each one of them wants to be the sole ruler of the world. You are Captain Reiji Osumi of the Free Alliance Space Force. You were a fighter pilot during the War, and your past is shadowed by a terrible incident. You are now sent to the Free Alliance Moon Base, suspecting a sabotage has taken place there. The Base is populated entirely by women, and when you arrive there, you notice their behavior is quite strange... has this something to do with the sabotage? It's up to you to reveal the mystery in this sci-fi hentai adventure. By selecting choices when investigating and talking to the women on the base, you can influence the course of the game and reach one of the 24 endings. A Limited Edition retained the Japanese censorshop mosaics. The game features an engrossing sci-fi suspense / mystery storyline written by Kenichi Matsuzaki, who was also instrumental in the creation of many classic sci-fi anime such as "Macross" (aka "Robotech"), "Gundam", "Bubblegum Crisis", and "Orguss".

Cubert Badbone, P.I.
Squinky / Deirdra Kiai Productions
[top]
This is a fun freeware point-and-click adventure game developed using Tim Furnish' SLUDGE engine that more than makes up for its short length with spot-on Noir-ish humor and style. The charming plot goes as follows: you play Cubert Badbone, the only private investigator on Ekrat Island, an island floating in space somewhat near Earth. Ekrat is a popular vacation spot for humans who visit from Earth, until one day they inexplicably start to disappear. This is bad for Ekrat's economy, as human tourists are a crucial source of income. It's up to you, then, to find out how and why the humans have disappeared from the island. The game's most obvious strength is the eye-catching and uniquely appealing graphics, which looks like a cross between black & white Noir films and zany claymation of The Neverhood. It does take a while to get used to the ornate, flowery font, though. The game has plenty of funny dialogues with memorable NPCs, although the puzzles are straightforward and a bit on the easy side. Overall, if you enjoy short but entertaining adventure games that focuses more on presenting a good story and imaginative cast of characters than stumping you with tough puzzles, it's well worth the 4-5 hours it takes to complete it (including some minor pixel-hunting headaches).

Dark Fall
XXv Productions / The Adventure Company
[top]
Dark Fall is also one of the very few games billed as "horror" titles that manage to be really scary. Essentially a one-man, self-published independent game, Dark Fall has achieved what many commercial titles have failed, and its superb quality defies anyone who thinks that it takes a million-dollar budget to create an atmospheric adventure game. Returning from work you are met by a frantic and cryptic message from your brother, a talented architect developing the old station at Dowerton, in Dorset. April Fool's Day had been and gone, so you decide that something is up. Boarding a train at London's Paddington Station you travel to the old station alone, wondering what adventure may greet you. But while the plot is somewhat predictable, the beauty lies in the masterful execution and astonishingly effective atmosphere. The graphics are appropriately dark, and various sound effects are put to good use. You will be startled more than once while playing this game, and playing it at night is a genuinely creepy experience. The gameplay is similar to Myst, but with a more "traditional" emphasis on inventory-related puzzles. You navigate the gameworld - in this case, the train station and hotel environs - from a first-person perspective. Along the way, you will come across strange symbols that are reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. These symbols together form the "meta puzzle" in the game: the core puzzle, similar to the sun map in Fool's Errand, that you won't be able to solve until the very end. It is the unravelling of the plot - and the ghosts' identities - that will keep you glued to the screen. The depth of the gameworld is remarkable, and many puzzles imaginative. If you like adventure games, you simply can't pass up on Dark Fall. It is engaging, atmospheric, and much more fun than countless commercial games.

Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair
Dragonstone Software / UbiSoft Entertainment
[top]
This action-adventure game is an entirely new, three dimensional version of the original classic game that appeared in 1983 on many platforms. Again, the player gets to play the goofy hero, but courageous knight, Dirk the Daring who is on a quest to save the pretty princess Daphne. The princess was kidnapped by the evil dragon Singe imprisoned in a medieval castle owned by an even more evil wizard called Mordroc. Now, it's only up to Dirk to use his courage and his quick reflexes to overcome the traps in the castle, if he wants to save the princess and his skin. In the Classic mode, you play the game the same way: press the button or push the joystick at the right moment to avoid a gruesome death. In Adventure mode, however, you control Dirk. You make him walk, jog, run, jump, roll, crouch, climb, pull switches, open doors, swing a sword, and just about all the other actions that you’d expect from a third person perspective action game. There’s also an Unfair mode, but it’s really, really, well...unfair. Not only are there the typical characters to fight, but any part of the castle could be fatal: floors crumble away, books and chairs attack you, poison gas seeps in, and so forth. Don Bluth and his partner Gary Goldman who animated the original game returned to assist the team, offering an original 2D opening animation sequence, a dozen new monsters (there are over 30 in the game), and access to the archive of Dragon’s Lair materials from the original game. There are 43 enormous areas containing over 250 rooms for players to explore, and there are plenty of hidden items to discover.

E.T.: The Phone Home Adventure
Lexis Numerique/New Kid Co / Ubi Soft
[top]
Commemorating the 20th anniversary of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, a trio of games by Ubi Soft was created to coincide with the re-release of the movie. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: Phone Home Adventure is an "activity quest for eight and up" and unfolds through a series of 3D scenes inspired by events from the movie. Exploration and activity are part of the adventure, which features 12 games in which E.T. interacts with Elliot, Gertie, and Michael. Trailers from the movie are also available for viewing from the login screen. In an effort to "phone home," players control E.T. as he attempts to locate the items necessary to communicate with his home and rejoin his ship. Upon starting the game, the player's cursor becomes an E.T. finger, and besides serving as the control mechanism for E.T., the finger will illuminate when a response or an action can be initiated. When items such as candy, a coat hanger, or a key can be picked up and placed into E.T.'s backpack, the cursor finger becomes a grasping hand. An onscreen task bar stores the collected items until they are ready for use and also enables players to receive help from either Elliot or Gertie. Players are able to save their progress via the task bar, while allowing them to exit the game at any time. Scenes include Elliot's bedroom, Gertie's closet, the main floor, the attic of the children's home, and, of course, the moonlit bicycle ride. Players will make use of E.T.'s healing power to save flowers and use logic to solve puzzles in order to gain certain items. Once he has acquired what he needs to build his communicator, E.T. can contact his ship and return home.

Eye Of The Kraken
Absurdus
[top]
This point-and-click graphic adventure game is filled with original jokes and slapstick comedy. The original storyline begins aboard a sailing vessel in the high seas. A very important document must be delivered “post haste” to Hyade Island and you, Abdullah, have been selected as the envoy. But before you get very far on your journey, you are interrupted by the delivery of a letter containing an urgent message from your friend, Titien. Titien advises that the Eye of the Kraken has been stolen and that the thief is aboard the very ship on which you are travelling. He implores you to find it and see that the thief is apprehended. You, of course, comply with your friend’s requests and set about finding the culprit. The gameplay as a whole is non-linear, meaning that you can accomplish some things in any order. The puzzles in the game are mostly object or inventory based, and none have time limits. Some objects are nonsensical and are included to add to the comedy element. There are numerous animated characters who move about the ship, all of whom you must seek out and talk to. Dialog is presented on-screen in text form only as are descriptions of objects and locations. The colorful graphic backgrounds are rendered in 2D in an isometric perspective. Outside scenes change when day falls into night. You can choose the background music you wish to hear within the game itself. The game was released as freeware on May 15, 2005, to promote the upcoming release of Absurdus' adventure Carte Blanche.

Frogger returns with a brand new look, style of gameplay and attitude. Whereas the popular arcade game was an action game, here you enter Firefly pond and join a magical adventure where an all-new Frogger searches for the princess of his dreams. In a lush 3D environment, Frogger explores dark caverns, goblin trails, swirling streams, perilous swamps and huge castles. During his adventures, Frogger interacts with over 80 unique characters that will help or hinder him in his quest to become a prince. He walks on two feet instead of hopping around on all four, shoots goobers out of his mouth, can glide after a jump by using his expanding throat, climb up and down vines located on walls. It's similar to Rayman 2 in many ways. Frogger also can use close-combat Frog-Fu and the ability to use these Magic Stones that are basically these different power-up skills. It has some irritating controls and camera movement, but the graphics are pretty good and colorful. Just about all of the characters that you encounter in the game have voices and there's quite a bit of speech.

GROM: Terror in Tibet
Rebelmind / CDV Software Entertainment AG
[top]
During World War II, Hitler's Third Reich sought out and pilfered art and wealth, hording their stolen booty in secret strongholds. This game takes place during that time. In 1942, special German forces have invaded Tibet and are searching for more to add to their Führer's arsenal - the 12 "miracle" weapons of King Arunja in an undiscovered "Lost City". One of these weapons, according to legend, could obliterate major cities, wiping them off the face of the earth. You take the part of Colonel Grom, a member of the Polish army fighting the Nazis during World War II. Grom is a seasoned and shrewd commander who has his own personal score to settle with the Germans. GROM is billed as a combination Action/Adventure/RPG. It is very much like a "point and click adventure", but it includes a good dose of real-time combat action. You will be selecting characters, moving them, setting their positions and managing their inventories. Travelling between the various locations is handled by way of a country map. Upon your travels you’ll meet many people — American and British soldiers, shopkeepers, merchants and, of course, some more hostile characters - The Nazis.

Hank's Quest:Victim Of Society
Femo Duo Entertainment
[top]
Hank's Quest is a fun fanmade graphical adventure game based on Sierra's AGI interpreter, similar to Police Quest 1, King's Quest III, etc. Depicting a teenager's life (typically the designer's) seems to be a popular topic for amateur adventure games, and Hank's Quest is no exception. You play a geeky, lanky teenager named Hank who must organize a party in his house to please his mother, who's accused him of not being as sociable as his younger brother, Paul. On the plus side, the graphics in Hank's Quest is more detailed than most fanmade AGI games - almost on par with Sierra's adventures, in fact. There are many objects to interact with in each room, with many entertaining comebacks that are not default "you can't do that" response (when you try to take the garbage bin, for example, the game exclaims, "this is not Space Quest II!" Overall, though, the game's overly simplistic parser makes it less enjoyable than it should be. Worth a look if you like Sierra's parser-based games, but be prepared to paraphrase your sentences very often throughout the game so the stupid parser can understand ;)

Kana: Little Sister
D.O. Corp. / G-Collections
[top]
This is is a Japanese dating simulator originally released in Japan in 1999. It was translated and published in an English version in 2002. It focuses on storytelling, and falls into the subgenre of dating sims which are full of tragic events and meant to be emotionally moving for the player. It also falls into the subgenre of games, manga, and anime revolving around incestuous relationships. One playthrough of the game takes about 5 to 10 hours. The story of Taka and his little sister Kana is told from Taka's perspective, starting when Kana is just about to start high school and then delving into the past to explore the relationship between the two siblings. The game is a visual novel, displaying scenery and characters in the background while the characters' dialogue and Taka's narration are displayed as text. Music and sound effects are also used. The unhurried narration is intended to allow the player to identify with Taka (and Kana) as the story unfolds. Over the course of the game, the player is presented with approximately 30 decision points which determine which path the storyline will follow and, ultimately, which of 6 possbile endings the player will achieve. A revival Windows edition was released in Japan in 2004 under the title Kana... Okaeri!!. This new edition retains the original storyline, but features new character designs and is fully voiced.

King's Quest II: Romancing The Stones VGA Fan Remake
Tierra Entertainment / AGD Interactive
[top]
This is without a doubt one of the best fanmade adventure games ever made. It brings Sierra's classic to the new century by not only recreating the original game in VGA, but also adds plenty of new plots and puzzles that will delight longtime fans. Not content with simply upgrading the original King's Quest II to VGA graphics and a point-and-click interface the way they have done with King's Quest I VGA, Tierra has gone an extra mile and then some with King's Quest II. Roughly half the game is new: there are new areas, new puzzles, and new plot elements added mainly to flesh out existing characters and make the game world much richer. For example, there is now the Kolyma town center, which houses a library, in which you can read a book that describes the town's history. All the new characters and plot elements are integrated seamlessly with the original game. As a nice "icing on the cake," the game now represents a passage of time from day to night, with appropriate graphic change. The way Tierra enhances the plot deserves special mention, because the end result not only makes KQ2 a "deeper" game in terms of storyline, but also ties seemlessly to KQ3, the next game in the series. For example, the wicked witch in the cave is now a major character, with her own backstory that includes an interesting relationship with Manannan, the evil wizard who would later appear in KQ3. In this way, characters in KQ2 are no longer merely there as puzzle mechanisms, but are much "deeper" people with fascinating background and agenda. Tierra obviously paid a lot of attention to ensure that no puzzle or plot thread in the game would seem out of place. For example, a minister named Gervain who speaks at length to King Graham in the introduction scene is mentioned in the original King's Quest II manual. Talk about a labor of love :) In addition to fleshing out the plot, Tierra also enhances the puzzles in the original game in a similar way, to tie them closer to the plot and make them appear much less far-fetched and less shallow than in the original game. For example, obviously valuable items such as Neptune's trident no longer lie in the open, but must be discovered or earned. Instead of picking up a stake from the ground, you will pick up a piece of fallen fence that "looks like a stake." With plenty of fascinating plot elements, the right degree of faithfulness to the original game, and commercial-quality graphics, It is hard not to recommend this outstanding fanmade game that will set the standard for all fanmade sequels/remakes that follow. A must-have.

Largo Winch: Empire Under Threat
Dupuis / Ubisoft Entertainment
[top]
This adventure game is based on the famous comic book character of the same name. The hero - Largo was a Yugoslavian orphan, who was adopted by the world's wealthiest man, who was in search of an heir. When his adoptive father dies, the now 26-year-old Largo inherits the Winch Corporation, a financial consortium worth more than 10 billion dollars. Drawn to the challenge of presiding over such a vast empire, Largo takes over from his father, and plunges headfirst into a new, unexpectedly vicious world of murder and deceit. It's a surprisingly entertaining adventure game that touches on some topical issues. Sure there are a few plot holes that can be put down to its comic book origins but overall I had a lot of fun with it. As it has a story driven, movie style plot with puzzles that start off gently before progressively increasing in complexity it is especially suitable for those new to adventuring. Hopefully, it will even convince some action fans to seek out more adventure games. Experienced adventurers too may find much to challenge and delight as once the game gets underway there are lots of locations to explore and plenty of things to do to keep the story moving along. The 3D graphics are very good indeed and the voice acting is generally acceptable though the lip-synching is a little awry because the game can be played in German, Italian and Spanish as well as English.

Lilo & Stitch: Trouble In Paradise
BlitzGames / Disney Interactive
[top]
In this kids action-adventure based on the Disney animated movie, help Stitch avoid bounty hunters and help Lilo work her voodoo magic while scaring enemies in wild, non-stop game play action. With a wide variety of enemies, reaching from a humble turtle to alien bounty hunters, Lilo and Stitch must cross various unique and challenging landscapes while testing their wits against moving platforms. Composed of three sections, each with five levels, this game offers plenty of gaming time spread out over various locations. Play alternates between Lilo and Stitch, who both have the same basic moves of jumping, running and butt-stomping, but have a few moves of their own, too. Basic gameplay involves collecting tokens (100 each level), special icons (4 each level) and various powerups, health and lives. The majority of these items are laying around in plain view, but some are in pots which must be broken to gain access. Some items are high in the air, too, which require some jumping around on platforms to get.

Masq
AlterAction,Inc.
[top]
Masq is an interactive comic with typical soap opera elements such as love, betrayal and murder, and the portrayal of characters in a pulp fiction fashion. It consists of five seamless episodes, which can be finished in an hour, but depending on the choices different storylines and plot twists can be explored. Notable developer Noah Falstein, of LucasArts adventure game, is involved with the project as an advisor. The protagonist owns a fashion firm and is about to launch a new collection called MASQ. He is married to Susan, an elementary school teacher. Other major characters are Thelma, an employee married to your friend Carlos, Peter, designer of the new collection, Williams, the superintendent of Susan's school, and Rogers who works at the bank. An investment is needed to launch the collection and there are different options to consider; there is a loan request at the bank but Mr Williams is prepared to make an offer as well. At the beginning of the game, Carlos needs your help and at the same time, the sexy, yet familiar, Nikki starts to work at the office. As a work of interactive fiction, the game cannot be lost. Instead, there are different outcomes based on the player's actions, offering a high replayability factor. The gameplay is shown as a series of still and animated comic-style sequences and images. The game is entire in black and white, with scarce spots of colour and no sound at all. At certain moments, the player can choose one of the available options or responses at the bottom of the screen. Before starting the game, the player's reading speed is determined. Not taking an action or late actions are interpreted by the game as well. It can still be adjusted manually while playing. Players can engage in relationships with other characters, and explore both violent and non-violent ways to solve conflicts. The game starts with 15 lives. Every time episode 5 is entered, a life is used up and when out of lives, the game cannot longer be played from the account. Sudden endings before the start of the fifth episode do not influence the number of lives. An active internet connection used to be required to play the game. The game exchanged messages, surveys and ads, and gathered playing behaviour for future games. The game can also be played inside a browser. Due to the explicit content, such as swearing, nudity, sex and violence, players should be over 17 years.

Missing On Lost Island
Mayhem Studios / Ricki Games / IncaGold / Ari Data
[top]
Lost Island is an adventure in the spirit of the famous Monkey Island saga. Its hand-drawn graphics brings out the nostalgia of the good old times, when there was rum more precious than blood and honor meant more than life. Your adventure will take you gradually through more than a 100 different locations in the amazing world of the pirates. Lost Island will take your fantasy for a journey and it is certain that it won't come back unchanged. The story begins in the city shrouded into darkness and a pair of young people walking quietly through deserted streets. The lad was named Tim and his red-haired girlfriend Diana. They entered a darkened street where they encountered a group of strange people. Their clothing recalled of a masquerade ball but definitely, they didn't look like celebrating anything. They drew their weapons. Tim was also properly armed so a shoot-out began. One of the strangers hit Diana. Tim expected a flood of blood but nothing like that happened. She kept twinkling for a while and then she simply disappeared. Before he managed to recover himself he heard a shot and all of his memories blurred into a fuzzy grayish smudge. He woke up alone on an unknown island in a time totally different.

Moop And Dreadly: The Treasure On Bing Bong Island
Hulabee Entertainment / Plaid Banana Entertainment
[top]
From a group of former Humongous Entertainment employees comes a kid-oriented adventure in the style of such classics as the Freddi Fish and Putt-Putt series. Moop, a giant purple thingy who can't speak English but does most of the thinking between the two, and Dreadly, a preteen buccaneer looking for treasure, search for the Golden Glockenspiel, but face competition from the dastardly Captain Trench. As is classic with these sorts of games, much hilarity does, in fact, ensue. The game is divided over six chapters featuring colorful, cartoony graphics and easy, lighthearted puzzles. The developer of this game, Ron Gilbert, has a resume as long as your arm. He is responsible for the Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion, better known as SCUMM, which changed the face of the adventure game world as we know it. He worked in the early days for LucasArts, creating “little known” titles Maniac Mansion, Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders, the Indiana Jones series, Loom, the Monkey Island series, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle. Moving on to Humungous and then to Hulabee, he created many of their Putt Putt and Freddie Fish titles. This game gives the impression that it's an homage to such 1960's children's classic cartoons as Gerald McBoing Boing and Beany and Cecil.

MusicVR Episode 1: Tres Lunas
Oldfield Interactive Ltd.
[top]
Before explaining what Tres Lunas is, you need to know who Mike Oldfield is. He's an iconoclastic British composer and musician, best known for a composition which he released in 1973 called "Tubular Bells", a portion of which was used in the film "The Exorcist". Most would consider his style of music to be avant-garde or New Age. In 2002, Mike Oldfield decided to expand his artistic horizons and create a computer game that used his music as a foundation. He named the project MusicVR and Tres Lunas is the first instalment in this endeavour. Tres Lunas fuses Oldfield's music with surrealistic images to create a sort of dream world for the player to wander through. The player can find and collect up to seven golden rings, but this is not really the goal. The real goal is simply to explore and discover. While playing, the player will encounter various creatures, people and objects. Some are helpful and some are a hindrance but none are dangerous or malicious.

You play Sherlock Holmes in first person perspective in this standard point-and-click adventure game. Lord Montcalfe, a well-known Egyptologist, is missing, believed by the police to have committed suicide. His daughter, Elisabeth, insists that he is still alive and calls upon her fiance's cousin, Sherlock Holmes, to prove her theories. Arriving at the manor, Holmes finds that Lord Montcalfe was suffering from a deep paranoia. It seems he had made a terrible mistake and triggered what he believed to be a mummy's curse. Trying to shield himself and others from that curse, he had booby trapped his own home with elaborate locks, some of which were designed to kill anyone who tried to tamper with them. Holmes investigates mostly in solitary fashion without the aid of his normal sidekick, Watson. Other people in the game appear only in the cut-scenes. Puzzles become more difficult as the story progesses. Ozzie And The Quantum Playwright
Dean Sullivan
[top]
This is an extremely short amateur adventure game that unfortunately doesn't offer nearly as much gameplay as its high production value may suggest. The game's plot is quite interesting: thanks to a huge drop in ranking of your university, the dean has decided to shut down the theatre department to build a library for accounting majors in its place. Since your girlfriend in the game is a theatre major, you (named Ozzie in the game) have to do something to stop it to prevent her from transferring to another school. And what better way to convince the dean of the merits of theatre than to use the time machine to bring back the world's greatest playwright of all: William Shakespeare. The game's strong point is definitely the graphics and sounds. As you can see from the screenshot, the background graphics is almost the same caliber as commercial adventure games. Every scene is detailed and very, very well-drawn. On the other hand, character graphics could use some work. Ozzie and other characters look like 2D paper dolls, and very "squished" when they walk toward edges of the screen, and they don't 'shrink' or 'grow' consistently enough to maintain the illusion of depth. The game uses an elegant point-and-click interface similar to Full Throttle: right-clicking on any object or person on the screen brings up a small action menu where you can USE, LOOK, or TALK to the target. Your inventory is easily accessed by moving the mouse to the top of the screen (as an aside, the game was coded using AGAST adventure game creation program, which emulates LucasArts' engine quite closely).

Post Mortem
Microids / Adventure Company
[top]
This title is a mystery adventure with supernatural overtones looking to be directly inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft. In the complex story, you play the role of Gus MacPherson, a former private investigator with New York's Pinkerton Detective Agency, who has left under shady circumstances to go to become an artist on the famous Left Bank in Paris in the 1920s. Suddenly a stunning young American woman named Sophia Blake comes by and wants you to investigate a murder that has just occurred at the swank Parisian Hotel Orphee - there has been a bloody decapitation of her sister's and brother-in-law, and it is completely unclear why. Everything is not what it seems, as you later find out that she is not telling the whole truth. Your skills as an artist are essential to solving the crime; the touch of clairvoyance that causes you to have visions and nightmares seems less crucial, but certainly adds to the mysterious and mystical atmosphere of the game. The French developers incorporate numerous surprising plot twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout this adventure. The story is spooky and visuals are atmospheric.

Prisoner Of War
Wide Games / Codemasters
[top]
This title is a Second World War stealth adventure. You are an American pilot, Captain Lewis Stone, who is thrown into a prison camp of the Nazis. While attempting to escape the camp, Captain Stone discovers about a secret weapon the Germans are developing to use against the Allies. Soon his personal wish of escape turns into a desire to save the world from the destruction the Nazis are planning. "Prisoner of War" could be best described as a sneaking game. Unlike other well-known games which feature the sneaking element - such as "Metal Gear Solid 2" or "Deus Ex" - is based on it entirely with no shooting elements. You are helpless in the prison camp and your only weapon is your wit. Sneak past guards to deliver an important object to a fellow prisoner, hide items in your clothes, stay in shadows to avoid being recognized - this is what the game is about. It also has a good deal of puzzle-solving, like in a traditional adventure.

Savoir-Faire
Emily Short
[top]
In 18th century France, a young man in urgent need of money visits his aristocratic adoptive father's house, only to find the inhabitants mysteriously vanished. Fortunately, he is not without resources: he is a student of the "lavori d'Aracne", an interesting form of magic based on weaving links between similar objects, so that anything that happens to one happens to both. This is in many ways an old-school treasure hunt, full of locked doors and no NPC's, but with rich detail (you'll have to look very hard to find a noun that isn't implemented), an impressive degree of simulation (especially in the handling of liquids), and many puzzles with alternate solutions. A real joy to play, and the kind of game that you'll keep toying with after you've finished it. Some bugs (as of version 6, at least). It is possible to lock yourself out of victory without realizing it.

"Who are you?" - asks Eike - "Perhaps the Satan himself? And where am I? Am I dead?". "You are dead, indeed", - answers the mysterious voice. - "But you can prevent it. Destiny can be changed, you know". And with this, the voice disappears, leaving Eike in the strange room with a mysterious time-traveling device. Eike doesn't quite understand what's going on. He knows one thing: in order to survive, he has to change the past, to make it impossible for the murderer to kill him. And so, the battle for survival begins. The murderer will find many ways to kill Eike, and in order to prevent this, Eike will have to travel thirty years ago, to the beginning of the 20th century, and to the Middle Ages. But the connections between the past and the present are stronger than Eike thinks. With no guidance but the mysterious voice, Eike has to explore Lebensbaum in various time periods, and solve the mystery. This is a pure adventure game. Now he is selling a mind-changing cola and you must stop him, and this time, unlike in the first two games, also save the world. Many familiar characters from the two previous games are back, and so is Simon himself with his red cloak. The gameplay is based mainly on wacky puzzles, like the first two games, but there are some action sequences, less linearity in the plot, and Simon can die. Besides, some puzzles can only be solved in a 3D environment. You are Kate Walker, a lawyer that has been entrusted by the Universal Toy Company to negotiate the takeover of an old luxury toy and automaton factory. Over the centuries, the factory has been developing clockwork devices, specializing in perpetual mechanical movement. The factory's ambitions, however, are ill-suited to the contemporary economic climate, and the elderly Anna Voralberg, at the helm of the Valadilene factory for more than half a century, has decided to sell up. The day that Kate Walker arrives, Anna Voralberg is being buried. What is more is that she has left an heir – her brother Hans. But Hans had left the valley at the end of the thirties and never returned, and was actually believed to be dead. However, a letter written by Anna in the days leading up to her death reveals that Hans is well and truly alive and living somewhere in Siberia. Valadilene's elderly notary entrusted to take care of Anna's affairs suggests that Anna find Hans Voralberg as he is now the only person in a position to ratify the sale of the family business. This is a state-of-the-art, 3D, 3rd person, point & click game, with a smart cursor, inventory and subtitles. The interface and controls are practically self-explanatory, among the easiest and smoothest ever. The puzzles are original, inventory based, and story related. They range in difficulty from the obvious to the moderately obscure, but all are logical, and they can be solved with attention to detail and the ample clues given in conversations and remarks. The world in which you find yourself seems somehow frozen in time, and the graphics are absolutely stunning. Done with a limited palette of grays and browns and mossy greens, they are atmospheric, understated and elegant, reminiscent of paintings by the old masters. The imagination shown for the unusual subject matter often makes you catch your breath in awe and the realism is unbelievable. The music is nothing less than magnificent - evocative, stirring, achingly beautiful and notably, only performed periodically for emphasis or heightened emotional effect, something usually only experienced in motion pictures. All of these different elements, including some cut scenes that you will never forget, work together synergistically to create the perfect illusion, as you travel across the face of Europe through four fantastic towns. You are magically transported to another place and time, to be captivated by the story itself for hours on end.

Tony Tough And The Night Of Roasted Moths
Prograph Research / Got Game Entertainment
[top]
Tony Tough is a traditional 2D "point and click" adventure with a crazy story. The humor and style are reminiscent of old LucasArts games, like Day of the Tentacle. Tony is a pint-sized Columbo, outfitted in a yellow slicker and hat. To be more exact, he’s a gnome-sized, nasal-voiced hypochondriac momma’s boy who left home at the tender age of thirty to work for a private detective agency. Now, ten years later, he’s still diligently toiling on the same case involving a pumpkin-headed, candy-thieving psychopath who takes great pleasure in stealing innocent children’s Halloween candy. But Tony is about to embark on an even stranger adventure as Pantagruel, his purple pet tapir, has been kidnapped sending Tony on a desperate search deep inside a demented carnival populated with a peculiar cast of characters – a bearded lady, a fortune teller, a pitiful clown - and a full assortment of rides – a ferris wheel and the tunnel of love – and a pizza shop, hot dog stand and a pirate-themed restaurant. It has wonderful, colorful graphics that will flood you with memories of games enjoyed in years past. The humor succeeds most of the time and the voice acting is quite good.

Valhalla Classics
Vulcan Software
[top]
To celebrate its 10th anniversary Vulcan Softwares highly acclaimed, highly addictive, all time classic Amiga speech adventure has been revamped and re-launched for your PC. All 12 episodes witness a complete re-recording of actor digital speech, improved music and enhanced graphics, the end result... A Preservation Of Gaming History! This hilariously amusing, award winning, devious puzzle solving speech adventure spans 12 episodes over 3 periods of royal rule and were released one a time fro 2001-2004. They are extremely simple to operate but very complicated in design, this demands a slow approach requiring logical and lateral thinking in order to solve the many devious puzzles. The simple background story is a classic fairytale. Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Valhalla, a twisted and evil man known as the Lord of Infinity killed his brother, the good King Garamond, and usurped the throne. And he then ordered the death of all those loyal to Garamond, which of course resulted in civil war, destruction and despair throughout the land. He also decreed that the little Prince, Garamond's 2 year old son and rightful heir to the throne, be drowned. But the little Prince was never found, having been spirited away by the good Bishop to a neighboring kingdom and there raised and schooled in wisdom and justice and taught the true history of his people. But it is now 14 years later and the little Prince has come of age. And he has come back home: back to Valhalla to destroy his father's murderer and take his rightful place as King of this once beautiful land. This is a God's-eye-view, 2D, 3rd person, point & click adventure, with inventory (the little Prince's rucksack) and subtitles. The game itself is played on the 'screen' of a virtual TV-like box called the Vulcan Portal (see picture below this review), which also contains all of your options within view at all times plus some unforgettable characters.

Versailles II: Testament Of The King
Cryo Interactive Entertainment / Réunion des Musées Nationaux
[top]
The sequel is set 14 years after events of previous game. Now is 1699 and the game opens against the background of the imminent death of Charles II of Spain. You are a young nobleman, who want to join foreign affairs office at French court with only goal: return to your beloved Elvira, who lives in Spain. But it is not simple, so during the game you have to raise your rank and become an assistant of Minister of Foreign Affairs. You have to do a different tasks, for example, make a tour for Spanish ambassador and correctly answer his questions or arrest German countess. Finally you must help France to get the Spanish throne from Germany. This game showcases a slightly different face of Versailles. Instead of being played out inside the sumptuous galleries and function rooms, on this occasion you are permitted only a peep into these areas with the stables, the gardens, and nearby hostelleries playing the major role. It's not a difficult game. The puzzles are not difficult and it is very easy to work your way through the story even though it's not fleshed out much and not always crystal clear. But it isn't technically an adventure; it's heavily weighted towards being an interactive book as you simply follow along where you are led learning about Versailles and French customs along the way.

Zaphie 2 Resurrection
Grigon Entertainment / eSofnet
[top]
Zaphie 2 occurs ten years after the events of the original as a teenage boy has just been declared sane and released from an asylum. Reminiscent of the Silent Hill series, the dark shading and gloomy atmosphere gives the game an overall feeling of suspense. You don't know who is your friend or foe, even if they appear to be helping you. Just because you find out something, does not mean it is a helpful clue. It could very well be a red herring meant to through you off. While the graphics are well done, they remind of the Japanese styled cartoons. They use very little movement but plenty of explanations of the plot in the details of the characters. It is not until the end you figure out whether the main character is truly insane, or beset by real demons.

Zelenhgorm: The Great Ship Episode 1 / Zelenhgorm: Episode I: Land of the Blue Moon
Moloto
[top]
The Great Ship is the first episode of the episodic fantasy adventure series Zelenhgorm: Land of the Blue Moon. Three more episodes were planned, but never finished. Zelenhgorm is a fantasy continent with earth-like qualities. In this episode, meet and learn about the Deyrec people whose clothes, dwellings and environment are decidedly early Scandinavian. Embedded in this civilization are superstition, folk-lore and magic as well as science. You play Arrikk Vaheirr, a young man who lives in the fishing village of Senava and invents odd machines in his garden. One day, two strange things happen to upset the daily routine - a giant ship runs aground on the river bank near Arrikk's garden ... and the dormant lighthouse begins to shine again. Arrikk's quest to discover the mysteries of the great ship, and the truths behind his haunting dreams, begins. Although played in first person, the scenery is full of the hustling and bustling of characters going about their daily lives. Even if you cannot talk to an onscreen character, they react as Arrikk passes by. The view switches to 3rd person view as your character changes locations or during special video sequences. Over 140 live actors form the cast, some of whom are famous through their parts in the Star Wars movies. Using full-motion video, the game has 360 degree panoramic views. All actions are controlled completely with a mouse, with the exception of using the ESC keyboard key to call up the main menu. Drop down menus appear when talking to the numerous characters. Open and close the bottom-screen inventory window by right-clicking and left-clicking respectively. Objects in inventory can also be combined which is necessary for solving some of the game's many challenging puzzles.

Zoombinis Island Odyssey
Learning Company, The / Broderbund
[top]
Those engaging and adorable little Zoombinis go back to Zoombini Isle, only to find that their home has been destroyed by Bloats, and the essential moths and critters (Zerbles) who sustained life on the island have vanished. To restore the delicate balance of life, children guide crews of 12 Zoombinis and their caterpillars through a series of mind-bending puzzles that will rejuvenate Zoombini Isle. When they first get to the island, children have to figure out the ball-dropping pattern of a chute and wheel to catapult the Zoombinis onto the island cliffs. They decode hieroglyphs to get each Zoombini through the gate, and guide the moths across flower beds according to certain attributes. While the games are unusually thought-provoking, some take several trials to figure out, even with the nicely narrated help system. In a Zerble feeding activity, for example, testers didn't realize that there were two ways to unveil the preferences of the little critters (using Venn diagrams) and struggled for too long. Kids found it tough to accurately estimate the time using a revolving Earth, and needed lots of help (as did their parents) when trying to figure out correct sequences in a planting activity. All things considered, however, the activities are responsive and addicting, and really get kids to use their heads. After the Zoombini crew gets through to the Zerble and moth hangout, it's time for a new crew to take the journey. In fact, there are 240 Zoombinis that must get through the games. That means that kids have to play the activities at least 20 times (more when the individual activities aren't completed the first time)!

Archangel
Metropolis Software House / JoWood Productions Software AG
[top]
Archangel is the third person budget rpg adventure game (with first person view option) where you control Michael, a guy who survives a car crash and wakes up in a monastery to find out he is needed to fight the ever growing forces of darkness. At the onset of your voyage, you are introduced to the Lord of Light and he gives you the option of receiving powers of a Warrior or a Ghost. As the Warrior, you are granted supernatural strength and your skin is like rock. As the Ghost, you are weaker, but you are nearly invisible and can cast a ring of fire that emanates from you, damaging all within the radius of effect. Once you choose, you can enable this secondary form for a short period of time based on your spirit energy shown by a regenerating meter on the HUD. You use it when you swing a special sword and it continuously drains when you change into your other form. There are also other spirit energy abilities you can “purchase” with Essence and you receive points for completing objectives and killing minions of the darkness. The first chapter of the game, you are in a medieval time. Your weapons consist of a knife, a light sword, a heavy sword, an axe, a bow and arrow, and your magical sword. The areas consist of gothic architecture, caves, forests, and swamps. After you find the three stones, you’ll move on to modern architecture, as well as modern weapons (i.e. guns), three different epochs in all. The human-like models are very square and blocky and graphics are not state of the art but do the job. The music is well done but voice acting is not, and there are bugs in the game as well.

Arx Fatalis
Arkane Studios / JoWood Productions Software AG
[top]
Arx Fatalis is a great subterranean 3D dungeon crawl from French developer Arkane styled after the classic Ultima Underworld. It's in first-person view and highly atmospheric. It's a shame it was released in same year as Neverwinter Nights and Elder Scrolls III:Morrowind so it didn't get the audience it deserved. You play as a character who's lost his memory and awakens in a small cell. The game takes place in a world where the sun has fizzled out and civilization has picked up and moved beneath the surface of the earth, since it's warmer down there. For fans of dark games like Thief, they'll enjoy this too. You're able to pick up just about anything that isn't nailed down, you can use the local flora to brew various potions and such, you can move or throw things around, and if you look down, you can even see your feet. You create your character by applying ability points to four core attributes and skill points to a number of different abilities, from close combat and magic to stealth, intuition, and object knowledge. Gaining experience levels lets you further improve these attributes and abilities. Your character has to eat throughout the game to survive. The game's combat and magic systems work very well. You'll be able to find and use some ranged weapons, but much of the combat takes place at close range, where you'll use things like swords, clubs, and axes to execute thrusting, slashing, and chopping moves against your assailants. You cast spells using proper hand gestures. You first need to find the proper runes, and you then trace the symbols on the runes in the air using your mouse. There's great sound and enemy animations and the paths are not too linear so you can explore many areas. Very highly recommended!

Divine Divinity
Larian Studios / CDV Software Entertainment AG
[top]
Many thousand years ago the Council of Seven in the magic land Rivellon sacrificed himself in the fight against a group of disloyal magicians, who had passed over to the dark side of magic. To remember the Council of Seven, the "Divine Order" was founded to pass on the knowledge of the wise men to the next generations. Two thousand years later signs such as civil unrest, war, hatred and greed indicate that the dark side has become strong again and that they are preparing a new attack on Rivellon. The prophecies of the wise men had mentioned a divine saviour of the Seven Races. This person shall be found and blessed in a secret ceremony before he/she falls into the enemys hands. You are, of course, "The Chosen One" according to the prophecy. But before you can venture out to slay evil, you must be blessed as the Divine Savior. Divine Divinity is an isometric 2D RPG similar to the style of Diablo, set in a completely original fantasy universe. The entire game world consists of over 20,000 screens, each one being a seamless transition into the next with weather effects and day/night cycles. Many subquests and nonlinear gameplay allow much exploration and replayability. Some of the game's features include six character classes with nearly a hundred skills to learn, over 100 different types of creatures and 150 unique NPCs. There's almost 500 skill levels to learn. The interface is among the most useful in any RPGs. The controls are simple, yet intuitive. An automap and journal makes sure you always know where you are and where you're supposed to be going.

Dungeon Siege
Gas Powered Games Corp. / Microsoft Game Studios
[top]
Dungeon Siege is a direct descendant of the grandfather of all of today's Hack'n'Slay "roleplaying" games, Diablo. You control one or more heroes in a gigantic 3D modeled fantasy world, slaying hundreds of monsters, casting spells and gathering experience points and valuable items. The story is as simple as it is in the game's predecessors: you are a humble, yet unnamed farmer, whose lands are devastated by the evil Krug. Of course, you can't let this just happen to you, so you set for revenge. Where Diablo (and Diablo II) had hand-drawn or pre-rendered graphics, Dungeon Siege takes the 3D approach. The entire world is rendered in real time, and there is no loading between levels - since there are no levels. It's more like the Ultima 7/8 games, where you have one gigantic world plane to roam. As already expected, there are literally hundreds of monsters already awaiting our farmer, and of course there are many different weapons and items for him (or his party members) to acquire. This as well is a different approach - you can have a real party, all controlled by yourself (or your multiplayer friends, for that matter).
A free bonus pack called Yesterhaven was later released as an extension to the gameplay and story of The Kingdom of Ehb and the Utraean Peninsula. It's a multiplayer-only short story, which does not require a pre-existing character, nor any previous experience with Dungeon Siege and can be played in Normal mode as appropriate with new characters, or saved characters from previous Dungeon Siege play. A movie adaptation was made in 2007 by the infamous director Uwe Boll called In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale and starred Jason Statham.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Bethesda Softworks
[top]
In the tradition of the Elder Scrolls series, Bethesda created a huge fantasy role-playing game that leaves more freedom to the player than most other games before. After being released from a prison ship at the shores of the island Vvardenfell, Morrowind heroes may do more or less what they want: follow the main quest and solve the mystery of an ancient prophecy, join any of roughly a dozen guilds and rise in their hierarchy by performing duties, or simply explore the gigantic island with its very individual cities, hundreds of dungeons and tombs, ancient ruins and mighty fortresses. Morrowind uses a two-stage skill system. Your hero’s primary stats (strength etc.) increase with each level gained, secondary abilities improve by use – the more often you jump, the more proficient you become in the Acrobatics skill. The real-time fights are simple exchanges of strikes or spells, until one combatant dies. What's annoying is the enemy's health condition is not shown. Your race and gender, but also your reputation influence the reactions of NPCs. If a character's sympathy for you is low (rated on a scale from 1 to 100), he might refuse to answer your questions; if it is high, you'll get more detailed information and better bargains in shops. Most quests involving other persons can be solved by persuasion, pick pocketing, or simply by force. Morrowind's NDL 3D game engine is powerful in drawing wide, detailed outdoor landscapes as well as complex indoor environments. Transitions are not fluent; houses and dungeons must be loaded upon entering. Graphically most notable are the cleverly textured character models and the beautiful water effects with realistic reflections.

This is a real time strategy based upon the Sci-Fi TV show. You can direct a team of three characters from the show, relying on their specific abilities to accomplish missions. Henson productions lent most of their talent to this game, providing music and the entire cast to perform the dialogue. The game requires that all of the characters survive, otherwise the game is over. It also requires that you work with the characters, unlike most RTS games, each character has a slightly different agenda. The game is set on planets that require exploration, ships, and various outworldly places.

This 3D rpg sequel starts where Gothic has ended... you found out, what your destiny is about. Now you have to make the best of the bad situation you're in. Gothic 2, as its predecessor, features a huge world, where you are free to do almost everything you want to. You can walk through the area, travel from big city to huge dungeons and meet many, many people you can talk with. Still, you can switch between the walk/interaction- and action-mode. For fights you still just need to press down the action-button + forward - quite easy. The rpg-system is also quite simple: by solving puzzles & fighting enemies, you get experience-points to gain levels and earn learning-points. And if you have enough of them you can buy a teacher who teaches you how to fight, sneak, & cast spells. This is another important part of Gothic 2 - the magic. You can cast quite a lot of nicely animated magic-spells to fight. For example, the dragons, that appear in this game...

However upon reaching the gates of the city, the army is challenged by the Serafan Order, an organized force of vampire hunters and it's leader, the magical Serafan lord. Kain engages the Serafan Lord in single combat, and is struck down and defeated, Kain's sword, the Soul Reaver, is claimed by his enemy. Unconscious for 200 years, Kain awakes under the care of the vampire Umah to a world he barely recognizes. Having lost it's army, the vampires have been hunted down by the Serafan and only a few remain. The city of Meridian is ruled under martial law by the Serafan Order and demands great things of it's citizens. Strange "Glyph magic" is used to power machines and fuel industry, but at the same time is deadly to vampires and used as wards throughout the city. Kain swears vengeance on the opponent who defeated him and seeks to reclaim his place as ruler of the vampires. This is a 3rd person adventure game, more similar in perspective to Soul Reaver than the first Blood Omen game. The player controls from behind Kain's shoulder and can move him in different directions, attack, jump, use "dark gifts" and grab on to ledges. Kain's life energy steadily depletes and must be replenished constantly by drinking blood. Blood is found by consuming any living creature nearby, often requiring defeating an enemy through combat first. As Kain consumes blood, his meter is filled up. Once full, Kain gains additional health. Kain also learns new dark gifts throughout the game, by defeating boss creatures. Some gifts include: the ability to blend into mist, fire projectiles, use projectile telekinesis or make a great horizontal leap. Many of these abilities can be used to perform "stealth kills" which will instantly defeat a foe. Kain will fight using his bare hands, or by picking up daggers, swords, axes and other weapons. These weapons all attack differently, eventually breaking, and can also be thrown at enemies from afar. The Serafan use Glyph magic, partially because it is deadly to vampires. Kain will often encounter areas where he is barred from progress because of Glyph barriers and must find a way around them. Additionally, glyphs function similar to electricity in that they power machines and switches. Many of the puzzles featured in Blood Omen 2 involve needing to create a glyph "circuit" in order to deliver power to a specific point. Glyph energy glows as it travels down it's connection, allowing the player to see exactly where the energy spark is.

Robin Hood: The Legend Of Sherwood
Spellbound / Strategy First
[top]
In this game, you get to take part in one of the oldest and still most popular stories of all. Only a hair's breadth from the action, you share in all the excitement and adventures of your heroes: Robin Hood, Little John, Will Scarlet, Stutely the Owl, Friar Tuck and the lovely Lady Marian. You can penetrate the mighty walls of Notingham Castle, York, Leicester, Derby and Lincoln, and attack heavily guarded convoys in Sherwood Forest. The Prince’s lightly-armed guardsmen and heavily armoured knights will challenge you to a duel on staircases lit by flaming torches. Or they might try and fool you with beer, hornets' nests or a well-aimed money-pouch. Whenever you want, you can go to the outlaws' camp and practise the basic and advanced game functions; whether hand-to-hand combat with swords or staffs, target practice with the bow or the skilful use of the many implements Robin’s followers have at their disposal. Easy mouse control and a system of icons you can understand intuitively will aid both beginners and experts in getting into the game quickly and helping you towards your first successful results. Movements and battles can be controlled problem-free using the mouse. The Robin Hood - The Legend Of Sherwood battle system enables you to have exciting duels with swords, staffs and other typical mediaeval weapons. But in the end it is having the right tactics which decides on victory or defeat. Whether you sneak into a castle and avoid the sentries or whether you take the direct route with sword and bow, is up to you. For example you can use the reduced visibility during the hours of darkness to your advantage. Or you can deploy the numerous abilities and special objects your men have, in order to distract the Prince's henchmen. Or then again you could try to fight your way through to your goal using well-aimed bowshots and skilfully deployed weapons. A lot of different possibilities present themselves; you just need to use them wisely.

Spider-Man: The Movie
Treyarch Invention, LLC / Activision Publishing, Inc.
[top]
Spider-Man, the classic comic book co-created by Stan Lee, is now a major motion picture. This conversion of the movie to the video game world takes the major storyline, characters and artwork of the Spider-Man movie and adds a lengthy backstory and new characters. The Green Goblin is the main villian here, and as Peter Parker you must defy gravity using your spider crawl, web-slinging and spider-sense abilities to track down Spidey's nemesis through the skyscapers of New York City. The major inclusion for this title over the previous Spider-Man series (on Playstation also by Activision) is aerial combat. Attack the enemy mid-air while web-slinging, rise and decend while swinging and banking around buildings create a greater emphasis on Spidey's greatest asset, the spider web.

Timekeepers
Vulcan Software
[top]
To celebrate its 10th anniversary Vulcan Software's highly acclaimed, highly addictive, simplistically complex Amiga puzzle game has been revamped with enhanced graphics, music & soundFX and re-launched for your PC. Timekeepers offers 8 worlds, each with 15 brain melting levels of chaotic platoon management, spread over 4 distinct time zones within Earth's history. That's 120 levels requiring logical and lateral thinking in order to solve the devious routes and save the Earth's past, present and future! Timekeepers: An elite police force, trying to protect the 4th dimension from terrorist attacks. 14 platoons are sent to 4 different time periods (2 million BC Belgium, 1245 Medieval Europe, 1966 Vietnam and 2001 Space). Their mission: to disarm nuclear bombs placed by a psychotic warlord. Timekeepers is hybrid strategy and puzzle game. It plays like a cross between Lemmings and a RTS like Dune 2. The main game screen has a row of icons at the bottom, timekeepers' portraits at each side and at the center a scrolling map of the level. The platoon is autonomous, the player can't control it directly but instead has to place icons on the map to order the troops. A soldier will try to perform an action while passing over an icon. The icons available are: Directions arrows - guide the trooper; Clock - stops the soldier for a while; Foot imprint - makes the timekeeper jump over something; Wrench - forces the trooper to operate some lever or switch; Gaping mouth - orders the soldier to attack; ZZZ - pauses the game; Brain - to choose earlier levels; Diskette - disk options, like saving and loading. There's no limit of time or amount of icons that can be placed. The levels have booby traps, enemies and dangerous environments that can kill your timekeepers. The main objective of each level is to reach the exit and teleport all your troops to the next map.
